Michigan State enters the series on unfamiliar ground—its first losing skid of the season. The year began with a surprising opening-night loss to New Hampshire, a stumble that could have rattled a lesser group. Instead, the Spartans ripped off nine straight wins, knocking off top-tier programs like Boston and Penn State.
But last weekend, the streak finally snapped.
Hosting then-No. 7 Wisconsin, MSU knew it was in for a grind. The Badgers have built a reputation for showing up in big moments against top-ranked teams—winners of 10 of their last 11 against No. 1 opponents entering the series. The rivalry always brings out the best in both teams, but this time Wisconsin emerged with the sweep.
The pollsters reacted accordingly: the Spartans slipped from No. 1 for the first time since early October. Wisconsin jumped up to No. 2, while rival Michigan Wolverines took over the nation’s top spot.
Martone delivered again last weekend, scoring the dramatic game-tying goal in Game 2 with 39.8 seconds left. His four-point weekend (3G, 1A) accounted for nearly all of MSU’s offense.
He now leads the team with 18 points (10–8–18), ranks 4th nationally in points per game (1.50), and sits 6th in goals per game (0.83). The kid is becoming must-see TV.
Junior goaltender Trey Augustine continues to be one of the top netminders in college hockey:
He leads the Big Ten in all three categories and anchors a defense ranked No. 4 nationally (1.75 GA/game).
This is a complete hockey team—one that doesn’t stay down for long.
Colgate will look to capitalize on MSU’s recent stumble, but the Spartans rarely stay wounded. The Raiders are led offensively by:
In net, Reid Dyck holds a 5-5-1 record with a 2.73 GAA as he attempts to slow down an angry MSU squad looking to get right before December hockey ramps up.
Michigan State 4, Colgate 0
Spartans respond emphatically with a defensive clinic.
Michigan State 3, Colgate 1
Closer battle, but MSU’s depth proves too much over 60 minutes.
