Tom Izzo bolsters the Spartans' future backcourt by securing a dynamic playmaker, ensuring the legendary coach’s "Point Guard University" legacy thrives with another elite top-ranked national prospect.
Point Guard University strikes again.
As Tom Izzo enters his 32nd season coaching at Michigan State, he continues to prove that his recruiting prowess has not slowed down. In fact, it has been on full display throughout the offseason.
The newest recruiting win for Izzo is one of the biggest yet.
Five-star point guard Antonio Pemberton of Masters Academy International in Hanover, Massachusetts, has committed to Michigan State, giving the Spartans another elite piece for the future.
Pemberton stands at 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds and possesses exceptional skill with the basketball in his hands. According to ESPN's SportsCenter NEXT Top 100, Pemberton is ranked No. 27 nationally in the 2027 recruiting class, where he is listed as a four-star prospect.
247Sports also lists Pemberton as a four-star recruit, giving him a 97 rating. He is ranked as the No. 20 player in the class, the No. 5 point guard and the No. 1 prospect in Massachusetts.
However, when combining the major recruiting services, Pemberton's consensus ranking elevates him into five-star territory.
His consensus rating currently sits at an impressive 0.9918, ranking him as the No. 23 overall player in the nation in the 2027 class. He remains the No. 5 point guard and the No. 1 prospect in Massachusetts.
For Izzo, another elite commitment is simply the latest example of his continued success on the recruiting trail.
Izzo Keeps Adding Elite Talent
Izzo's 2026 recruiting class already ranks among the nation's top 10 classes and will soon have an opportunity to make its mark in East Lansing.
Jasiah Jervis, Carlos Medlock Jr., Julius Avent and Ethan Taylor make up the core of that class, with all four players ranked in the SportsCenter NEXT Top 100 for the 2026 class.
Now, Izzo has immediately turned his attention toward 2027.
Pemberton visited East Lansing during Grind Week last week and clearly came away impressed with what Michigan State has to offer. The Spartans appeared to be in an excellent position throughout his recruitment, and now Izzo has officially turned that momentum into another major commitment.
Michigan State Is Becoming Point Guard University
There is a reason the "Point Guard University" label continues to gain steam around Michigan State.
Jeremy Fears Jr. is expected to take another major step forward this season, while Jervis waits in the wings as one of the most highly touted young guards in the program.
Now, add Pemberton to that pipeline.
The possibilities for Michigan State's backcourt in the coming years are exciting. Pemberton could eventually join Jervis in the backcourt, while a player like Medlock Jr. could potentially occupy the shooting guard spot.
The combination of size, skill and playmaking could give the Spartans an incredibly talented backcourt to work with.
Of course, there is still plenty of basketball to be played before Pemberton arrives in East Lansing. But the potential is undeniable.
Izzo Isn't Slowing Down
As Izzo gets deeper into his legendary coaching career, there will inevitably be questions about when his recruiting success might begin to slow down.
This commitment provides another answer.
It isn't happening yet.
Izzo has once again landed an elite national recruit, adding a consensus five-star, top-30 player to Michigan State's future.
Point Guard University just added another star.
