Another day, another article about Michigan State landing inside a major player’s top teams. It’s starting to feel like a holiday every time MSU pops up on one of these lists—and honestly, it should.

Not long ago, though, things looked very different in East Lansing.

As recently as last season, Michigan State was coming off a disastrous 2025 campaign that made it nearly embarrassing to be a Spartan fan. The program felt stuck, with fans leaning on past victories just to stay sane while the current team seemed to sink deeper and deeper into the sand.

Then, things began to shift.

The Spartans made a change at quarterback, picked up their only conference win, and followed that with a head coaching change. Now, fast forward to today, and Michigan State suddenly looks like a team winning the offseason.

That momentum continues with the Spartans landing in the top three for 4-star defensive lineman Nehemiah Ombati, alongside Nebraska and Missouri.

Ombati checks in at 6-foot-2, 275 pounds and hails from Shakopee, Minnesota, where he plays for Shakopee High School. He’s one of the more sought-after defensive linemen in the 2027 class and would immediately enter Michigan State’s recruiting class tied as the top-rated commit based on 247Sports grading.

According to 247Sports, Ombati holds an 89 rating—technically the highest possible grade for a 3-star prospect. In reality, that number puts him right on the fringe of 4-star status, and he’s widely viewed as just a step away due to the fine margins in recruiting evaluations. His rating currently slots him as the No. 35 defensive lineman in the 2027 class and the No. 2 overall prospect out of Minnesota.

However, when looking at the composite rankings, Ombati officially lands as a 4-star recruit with a 0.8957 score. That composite ranking highlights just how close he is to being universally recognized as a 4-star across all major platforms.

Nationally, his composite ranking places him at No. 373 overall, No. 42 among defensive linemen, and still the No. 2 player in Minnesota.

For Michigan State, the intrigue goes beyond just landing a top-tier defensive lineman—it’s about building something bigger in the trenches.

The Spartans are already envisioning a future defensive front featuring Ombati alongside fellow 2027 commits like Ohimai Ozolua, another 89-rated 3/4-star defensive lineman, and Jack Schuler, an 86-rated 3-star edge rusher. Together, that group has the potential to form a strong, disruptive core up front.

A major reason for this defensive line momentum has been defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere, who has been relentless on the recruiting trail. He’s consistently bringing in talent and has already made a strong impression on Ombati. Now, the question becomes whether he can close the deal and add yet another high-impact piece to the class.

On the field, Ombati’s production backs up the hype.

During the 2025 season, he recorded 70 tackles, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. He uses his size effectively, clogging running lanes and making life difficult for opposing offenses. At the same time, he shows the ability to collapse the pocket, driving offensive linemen backward and creating chaos for quarterbacks.

While his size is a major strength, Ombati isn’t just a space-eater. He moves well for his frame, showing quick feet and surprising agility. It’s that combination of power and mobility that allows him to impact the game in multiple ways—and makes him far more than just a traditional defensive tackle.

Michigan State can always use help in the trenches, but it’s players who can truly shift the outcome of games that elevate a program.

Ombati fits that description.

As he prepares for his senior season of high school football, he’s a name Spartan fans should keep a very close eye on.
