Courtney Hawkins targets a dynamic playmaker from St. Louis to revitalize the Spartans' offense, betting on the unrated prospect's elite contact balance and explosive open-field vision.

One glaring issue for the Spartans this year has been the wide receiver position.

From a lack of separation to dropped passes, Michigan State is desperate for a playmaker. That type of player may already be on the team after the Spartans brought in some big recruits during the offseason, but they are still waiting for those players to come to fruition.

Another player Michigan State might be banking on to help improve the position in the future is the latest wide receiver to receive an offer from the Spartans.

Pat Fitzgerald and wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins have officially extended an offer to a 2027 wide receiver who seems eager to showcase what he has to offer, much like the Spartans are emphasizing that same mentality.

Wide receiver Kyren Evans hails from St. Louis, Missouri, where he attends Lutheran North High School. He measures 6-foot-1 and weighs 180 pounds.

Per 247Sports, Evans has not yet received a star rating. However, that has not stopped several schools from reaching out and extending offers. It is still very early in his recruiting process, and while schools like Northern Iowa and UCLA have already offered Evans, Michigan State becoming just the second Power Four school to do so could make a difference.

Recruiting isn't always about the last team to show interest in a player. Sometimes, it's more about which program was first to make a great impression. If Hawkins can leverage the opportunity for playing time and offer Evans an honest look at the Spartans' wide receiver room, Michigan State could have a real chance of landing his commitment.

Evans' ability to catch the ball certainly helps him stand out when watching his film, but there is more to his game than just making catches. It's what he can do after the ball is in his hands that really stands out.

Evans moves and shimmies like some of the best ball carriers I've ever seen. He has great balance, and even when he takes a hit, he absorbs the contact and keeps his feet moving, bouncing off defenders like a pinball.

He's fast, too. After making the first defender miss, Evans is usually off to the races. He could be a dangerous return specialist, and his versatility could allow him to make plays through the air or on a reverse. Whatever the situation, once Evans gets the ball in his hands, he has the ability to turn an ordinary play into a big gain.

If the Spartans can secure Evans' commitment, the future could be bright for both Michigan State and its wide receiver position in East Lansing.
