We are officially in Michigan vs. Michigan State week, and life couldn’t be better.
Both teams enter Friday’s matchup coming off grueling, nerve-wracking, gut-clenching, jaw-dropping wins.
For Michigan, it was a highly contested battle against the then-undefeated Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Wolverines found themselves tied 72–72 with Nebraska in the waning moments before driving to the basket for a controversial score. No foul was called, and Michigan escaped with a 75–72 win.
Michigan State’s path was no less dramatic. The Spartans trailed by three in the final seconds of regulation after playing from behind for most of the night. Jeremy Fears found Divine Ugochukwu, who buried a game-tying three with seconds remaining. From there, Michigan State flipped the switch in overtime, finishing with a nine-point win and escaping New Jersey with a victory they arguably had no right to steal.
Now, the two rivals sit at a combined 38–3. Michigan enters at 19–1, Michigan State at 19–2. The Wolverines are ranked third, the Spartans seventh, and this matchup has all the makings of one of the best games of the college basketball regular season. The only game that may top it? When these two meet again on the final day of the regular season.
Michigan is the higher-ranked team, so it’s no surprise that Vegas gives them the early edge. The Spartans open as home underdogs at +1.5, with the over/under set at 140.5.
Michigan State has defended home court against the Wolverines every year since 2018. Michigan still holds a slight edge in the all-time series, leading 97–92, but recent history favors the Spartans. Michigan State has won the last four meetings regardless of venue and seven of the last nine overall.
In the KenPom rankings, both teams sit near the top in nearly every category. Michigan ranks second nationally in net rating at +35.65, while Michigan State comes in sixth at +30.88. Offensively, Michigan creates separation, ranking eighth with a 125.4 offensive rating. Michigan State sits further back at 42nd with a 120.5 mark.
When the scoring tightens, defense takes over — and that’s where this game gets fascinating. These teams rank first and second nationally in defensive efficiency. Michigan State holds the top spot at 89.6, with Michigan close behind at 89.8. They are the only two teams in the country with a sub-90 defensive rating according to KenPom.
So if you’re expecting a 100–100 shootout, you’re watching the wrong season.
This game should be defined by elite defense, effort, and execution. Every possession will matter, and every player will be asked to give everything they have. The benches will play a role, but the true sixth man may not be the one you’re thinking of.
The fans could decide this one.
Spartan fans will need to bring everything they’ve got on Friday night, creating an environment capable of disrupting Michigan’s offense and swinging momentum when it matters most.
This matchup has everything a college basketball fan could want — and now we finally know who Vegas thinks will win. Leave a comment if you think the odds are right, or if you believe the Spartans pull it out at home.
We’ll have more breakdowns, predictions, and how-to-watch coverage coming all week.
