Tom Izzo is targeting a powerhouse presence for "Rebounding University," scouting a physically dominant New Jersey standout capable of anchoring the paint and terrorizing opponents at the rim.

Tom Izzo has always put an emphasis on dominating the glass, and that has become one of the defining traits of his program.
Landing a 6-foot-8, 235-pound monster in the paint would only fuel that identity, and that's exactly what Izzo is hoping to do after extending an offer to 2027 four-star center Kamsi Awaka.
Awaka is a behemoth who overpowers his opponents more often than not. His ability to establish deep position and downright bulldoze defenders in a legal way is outstanding. Awaka looks like he not only has the potential to become one of the most feared centers in college basketball, but he also looks like someone who could fill gaps and sack quarterbacks for the Spartans football team if he ever suited up in East Lansing.
Awaka is a four-star recruit from Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey.
According to 247Sports, Awaka carries a 91 overall rating, ranking him as the No. 52 overall player nationally, the No. 8 center in the 2027 class, and the top-ranked recruit in the state of New Jersey.
His composite recruiting rating sits at 0.9766, which drops him slightly in the overall rankings to No. 60 nationally. However, he still remains the No. 8 center in the class and the top prospect coming out of New Jersey.
In the SportsCenter NEXT Top 100 rankings, Awaka is listed as the No. 80 player in the country with a scout grade of 82. One interesting note is that SportsCenter NEXT lists him at 6-foot-9, while 247Sports has him measured at 6-foot-8.
No matter which measurement is correct, Awaka somehow plays even bigger. His combination of size, strength, and surprising athleticism for such a powerful frame is almost unbelievable. Regardless of whether he's 6-foot-8 or 6-foot-9, his presence and demeanor make him play like an eight-foot giant.
In July, Awaka participated in the adidas 3Stripes Select Basketball (3SSB) Championships, the premier grassroots platform for adidas Basketball that showcases many of the nation's top prospects looking to compete at the next level.
Playing in the 17U All-Circuit, Awaka earned Defensive MVP honors after averaging 14.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.6 blocks, and 1.2 assists per game while helping lead his team to a perfect 5-0 record and a championship.
The event also featured Tom Izzo in attendance alongside coaches from several major programs, giving them an up-close look at many of the nation's top recruits. Awaka certainly made sure he was impossible to miss.
Michigan State is far from the only school pursuing Awaka. The Spartans join an impressive offer list that already includes programs such as Arizona, Florida, and UConn. Izzo will undoubtedly have his work cut out for him as he tries to land one of the premier centers in the 2027 recruiting class.
Even entering his 31st season at Michigan State, Izzo continues to attack the recruiting trail with the same energy that has defined his Hall of Fame career. There are no signs of him slowing down—if anything, he's only picking up momentum.
Izzo has always stayed true to his philosophy despite the many doubters over the years, and more often than not, he's the one getting the last laugh. Now, his focus shifts toward building the strongest 2027 recruiting class possible as Michigan State extends another scholarship offer to one of the nation's top-100 prospects.
