Can you smell it?

It smells like Big Ten basketball at its peak. Two teams an hour apart. Two top-10 programs. The nation’s two best defenses. An in-state rivalry that never needs extra fuel — but has plenty of it anyway.

This is the most electric game of the college basketball season, at least until these teams meet again March 8th in Ann Arbor. The entire state is buzzing. The hype feels different this year. Both fan bases believe this is the season — the one that ends with nets cut down and banners raised.

These teams feel destined to meet three times, with the third coming for everything. A national championship matchup between Michigan and Michigan State would be the greatest sporting event this state has ever seen. That’s projecting far ahead — but it sets the stakes for what this rivalry could become.

For now, every game matters. With ten remaining, none loom larger for the Spartans than the two against Michigan.

Expect a slugfest. Pushing. Shoving. Hard fouls. Maybe a scrum or two. This won’t be decided by finesse — it will be decided by toughness, physicality, and grit.

Both teams enter off statement wins. Michigan State needed a late three to force overtime at Rutgers before pulling away for a nine-point win, extending its streak to seven. Michigan handed Nebraska its first loss of the season, snapping a 20-game winning streak with a dramatic three-point victory. The Wolverines have won five straight. Between these teams, there are only three total losses — but another is coming.

Turnovers could decide it. Michigan State averages 11.5 per game (203rd nationally), a number that has improved during the win streak. Michigan struggles more, averaging 12.4 turnovers (287th). Whichever team values the ball gains a major edge.

Rebounding will be a war. Michigan averages 39 boards per game (6th nationally); Michigan State sits right behind at 38.6 (7th). The Spartans have the edge on the offensive glass, ranking tied for 32nd at 11.5 offensive rebounds per game, compared to Michigan’s 9.9. Jaxon Kohler (9.3 RPG) and Carson Cooper (7.5) anchor the Spartans, while Michigan counters with Morez Johnson Jr., Aday Mara, and Yaxel Lendeborg.

Both teams move the ball well. Michigan averages 19 assists per game (9th nationally), just ahead of Michigan State’s 18.9 (10th). Jeremy Fears is the engine, averaging 8.9 assists per game — second in the nation. Michigan is led by Elliott Cadeau at 5.3.

The biggest concern for the Spartans is shooting. Michigan is elite offensively, averaging 90.9 points per game (8th nationally) and shooting 51.5% from the field. Michigan State averages 79.5 points and shoots 47.9%. The Wolverines also make more threes per game.

That’s why defense will define this game. Michigan State ranks No. 1 in KenPom defensive efficiency. Michigan ranks No. 2. The Wolverines must contain Fears, who scored 29 against Rutgers and is emerging as a Big Ten Player of the Year contender. He leads the Spartans at 14.1 points per game, just behind Michigan’s Lendeborg at 14.2.

Two teams. Same record. Same goal. Two speeding cars headed straight at each other.

Prediction:

Michigan State - 66

Michigan - 65
