Robyn Fralick’s squad eyes a deep postseason run as stars Kennedy Blair and Theryn Hallock reunite to navigate a daunting Big Ten slate and a fierce rivalry.
We are getting closer and closer to the start of college basketball for both the men’s and women’s teams. For the Spartans, the expectations may have never been higher.
Michigan State returns a solid core of ladies who will look to earn their way beyond the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009.
Head coach Robyn Fralick helped lead Team USA’s U18 team to a gold medal this summer after agreeing to serve as an assistant coach. For the last three seasons, Fralick has helped lead the Spartans to the NCAA Tournament, marking the first time Michigan State has made the tournament three straight years since its run from 2009-2014.
It’s a new era at Michigan State, as Kennedy Blair took over last year and quickly became a household name for all of Spartan Nation. Now, Blair gets the return of Theryn Hallock, who, along with Blair, could form one of the most exciting backcourts in all of women’s college basketball.
Hallock missed last season due to an injury but was able to remain a Spartan for one more year. Now, the two, along with the rest of the team, will look to make Hallock’s final season something even more special.
To do that, the Spartans will have to go through a gauntlet of great Big Ten teams, as usual. However, the non-conference schedule looks a bit more relaxing.
Outside of a showdown with Gonzaga, where both the men’s and women’s Michigan State teams will travel to California to play Gonzaga at a neutral site in the Acrisure Classic, the Spartans’ non-conference schedule looks very manageable.
The Big Ten games kick off extremely early, with the first one coming on December 6 against Penn State.
The next Big Ten game comes after the Spartans arrive back in the Great Lakes State following their showdown against Gonzaga. That game will be December 29, when the Spartans take on their in-state rivals, the Michigan Wolverines.
Michigan beat the Spartans twice last year, with the second matchup ending in a massive blowout. That left a bad taste in the Spartans’ mouths, and Michigan State will be out to extract some revenge this season.
That Wolverines game will kick off 17 straight Big Ten games, with the stretch eventually capping off with the second showdown against Michigan in the final game of the regular season at the Breslin Center.
The Spartans will also make a West Coast trip, with two of their final four games coming in California against USC and UCLA on February 18 and 21.
Michigan State’s other road games will come against the aforementioned Michigan matchup on December 29, as well as Northwestern, Nebraska, Illinois, Rutgers, Maryland and Ohio State.
The season is quickly approaching, with the first and only exhibition matchup coming in just 41 days against Michigan Tech.
It’s going to be a good season with high expectations.
