As Tom Izzo doubles down on elite high school talent over the transfer portal, Kansas’s top-ranked playmaker prepares for a high-stakes October trip to East Lansing.

Don’t look now, but summer is flying by.

Long days, hot droughts, constant bugs, and endless joyful summer songs being played on repeat are all about to come to a screeching halt before anyone realizes it.

With that ceremonial tombstone being put up for another fantastic summer comes the fun decorative tombstones, as October 1 — now just over two months away — marks the start of the holiday season. At least at my house, it also marks the day Halloween decorations start going up.

This year, however, October 1 will hold just a little more weight, as it also marks the day 4-star recruit Jaxson Davis is expected to head to East Lansing for an official visit with Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans.

It's another example of Izzo staying close to one of the nation's top recruits as he continues prioritizing high school talent. While more and more programs have begun leaning heavily on the transfer portal instead of battling tooth and nail for the best incoming freshmen, that hasn't changed Izzo's approach.

Izzo continues doing things his way, and this time he's got one of the top SportsCenter Next Top 100 players squarely in his crosshairs.

That player is Jaxson Davis, a 6-foot, 165-pound point guard who is looking to join a program that's beginning to reidentify itself from "Rebounding U" to "Guard U."

Davis currently plays for Monarch Academy and received an offer from Tom Izzo earlier this month.

Just to recap where Davis stands, according to 247Sports, he's rated as a 92 overall prospect, ranking No. 35 nationally, the No. 10 point guard in the country, and the top-ranked player in Kansas.

His composite rating sits at 0.9832, placing him No. 41 nationally, the No. 11 point guard, and once again the top prospect out of Kansas.

Davis is also a 4-star recruit who ranks No. 51 on the SportsCenter Next Top 100 list for the 2027 recruiting class. Currently, there aren't any Spartan logos next to the names on that list, but Izzo has been aggressively recruiting a long list of prospects in the 2027 class, including several of the players near the top of those rankings.

For some added context, only 17 of the 100 players on the SportsCenter Next Top 100 list have committed to a school so far, leaving plenty of elite talent still on the board.

Izzo certainly hasn't backed down from attacking the recruiting trail. He assembled a top-10 2026 recruiting class featuring Jasiah Jervis, Ethan Taylor, Carlos Medlock Jr., and Julius Avent, with all four players appearing in the SportsCenter Next Top 100 rankings for the 2026 class.

If the Spartans can continue adding four- and five-star talent at this pace over the next couple of recruiting cycles, they'll have one of the most talented roster makeups to wear the Green and White in quite some time.

Before making his way to East Lansing, Davis has another Big Ten visit scheduled for Sept. 19 with Iowa. Less than two weeks later, he'll arrive on Michigan State's campus for what could become one of the more important recruiting visits of the 2027 cycle.

There will undoubtedly be plenty of schools battling for Davis' commitment over the next year, but few programs can match the recruiting presence and track record of one Tom Izzo.
