After plenty of turnover, the 2026 Michigan State Spartans are just about set to begin fall camp. Whether you like it or not, football season is only about a month away. So make sure to squeeze in as many lake days as possible because Labor Day, school, and college football are right around the corner.
Spartan fans already know what's on the horizon thanks to the schedule, but the results could vary dramatically. Michigan State could shock the college football world and put itself in the conversation for a legitimate Big Ten title run. On the other hand, the floor could be much lower. Both are extreme scenarios, though, so let's reel things in a bit.
It would make for a pretty bad article if I simply said the Spartans' highest high is going undefeated and their lowest low is winning zero games. While both are technically possible, it would also be one of the most boring articles known to mankind and have everyone scrolling to the next story.
Instead, I'll do my bona fide best to determine this team's realistic ceiling and floor for each game during the first half of the 2026 season.
September 5 (Home) vs. Toledo
Ceiling — Win (1-0)
Floor — Win (1-0)
Could the floor here be a loss on opening day? Maybe. Toledo is one of the top programs in the MAC and will absolutely come into East Lansing looking to shock the Spartans. Still, with it being Pat Fitzgerald's first game leading the Green and White, I believe he'll have this team prepared for an opening-week dogfight. I'll go on record saying there's no chance Michigan State loses to Toledo.
September 12 (Home) vs. Eastern Michigan
Ceiling — Win (2-0)
Floor — Win (2-0)
This feels similar to the Toledo matchup, but I'm even more confident. The Spartans could find themselves in another close battle against a MAC opponent, but even on their worst day, I don't believe there's a universe where Michigan State loses to Eastern Michigan.
September 19 (Away) at Notre Dame
Ceiling — Win (3-0)
Floor — Loss (2-1)
I'd like to believe there's a universe where Max Bullough brings valuable insight about Notre Dame's personnel and schemes over to East Lansing, giving the Spartans a legitimate chance to pull off the upset. It would take one of Michigan State's best performances of the season, but it's possible. The more likely outcome, however, is Notre Dame protecting its home field and handing the Spartans their first loss.
September 26 (Home) vs. Nebraska
Ceiling — Win (4-0)
Floor — Loss (2-2)
I think this could quietly be one of the better games on Michigan State's schedule. It's an underrated matchup between two teams that could be fighting for bowl eligibility by season's end. Since they meet early, both teams will desperately want this win to build momentum.
The Spartans absolutely have a path to victory if the offense is firing on all cylinders. Nebraska, however, has a strong rushing attack that can wear down opposing defenses. Michigan State's defensive line will need to bring everything it has if the Spartans want to come away with the win.
October 3 (Away) at Wisconsin
Ceiling — Win (5-0)
Floor — Loss (2-3)
I was very close to making this a win for both the ceiling and floor, but I won't let my bias take over. Wisconsin is always dangerous at home, and Camp Randall is never an easy place to play. That's where the floor comes into play.
That said, I believe Michigan State has the more talented roster and should head into Madison and come away with a huge road victory, continuing to showcase what Fitzgerald's new-look Spartans are capable of.
October 10 (Home) vs. Illinois
Ceiling — Loss (5-1)
Floor — Loss (2-4)
Even with this game being played in East Lansing, I'd bet my mortgage the Spartans won't be able to pull this one out. Sure, maybe there's a universe where Michigan State defends its home turf, but Illinois has one of the best teams in the Big Ten this season. More than likely, the Fighting Illini hand the Spartans a tough home loss before the second half of the season gets underway.
First Half Recap
If everything breaks right and Michigan State reaches its ceiling, the Spartans could shock the college football world by opening the season 5-1 through their first six games.
If things don't go according to plan, however, the floor has Michigan State sitting at 2-4 while riding a four-game losing streak heading into the second half of the season.
