If you’re trying not to get sucked into the mainstream donation to Vegas, I applaud you. That takes real self-control. But if you look in the mirror sometimes and think, “Man, I love betting on things I’m confident will win,” then you might actually be one of the ones making some money.
Here’s the key: the smart way isn’t throwing a ton of money at big parlays or long-shot tickets and hoping for life-changing luck. Can it happen? Sure. But it puts you on a dark path that’s hard to get off. Even when you hit a crazy parlay, you often find yourself chasing that high, coming up one leg short over and over.
What I’m trying to get across is simple. Have fun with your bets. Do what you want. But if you take one piece of advice from this, go bigger on the straight bets you like. You don’t have to get rich in one day. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither should your bankroll or your retirement.

Nick Faber’s Week One Spartans Lock of the Week: Chrishon McCray Under 54.5 receiving yards
I hate taking unders on a guy from a team I root for. But locks of the week are business.
I get why the number sits around 55. McCray is the clear WR1 in a group that lacks proven experience beyond him. After him, the depth chart is mostly wildcards. If Alessio Milivojevic is going to push past his 234.5 passing yards line, McCray is the most likely target.
That said, I don’t expect offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan to empty the playbook in Week 1 against Toledo. This is a must-win to start the Pat Fitzgerald era, but it’s also a tune-up. Get the offense rolling, establish identity, and avoid forcing things. I expect a heavy dose of Cam Edwards in the run game. The game script should lean ground-and-pound with a strong defensive emphasis rather than a high-volume passing attack. That keeps Milivojevic’s under in play too—and it directly limits McCray’s ceiling.
Rain is in the forecast leading up to kickoff and into the first half. Earlier in the week I was leaning overs and would have liked McCray’s over. Sometimes you have to adjust. Cooler September temperatures mixed with wet conditions point toward fewer points and fewer passing yards.
Less scoring environment + run-first approach + weather = the under on McCray is the play I’m most locked on for Week 1.
