Tom Izzo tackles a brutal gauntlet as Jeremy Fears Jr. chases a national title, facing perennial powers like Gonzaga and navigating a fierce Big Ten title race.
The Michigan State 2026-27 basketball schedule has officially dropped, and it is a doozy.
Tom Izzo held nothing back when it came to scheduling a gauntlet for his team, but that is nothing out of the norm for Izzo. The Spartans consistently play a challenging non-conference schedule to prepare for the bigger task at hand: the Big Ten schedule.
Last season, the Big Ten placed five teams in the final eight of the NCAA Tournament, two in the Final Four and ultimately produced the national champion in Michigan. The Wolverines defeated UConn 69-63 to win the program's first national championship since 1989 and the Big Ten's first title since Michigan State in 2000.
Now, Michigan State enters the 2026-27 season with sky-high expectations, led by Jeremy Fears Jr., who was named the preseason National Player of the Year by Blue Ribbon College Basketball. Fears is also among the leading preseason candidates for the Big Ten's top individual honors. He is the first Spartan to earn Blue Ribbon's preseason National Player of the Year honor since Mateen Cleaves in 2000.
Cleaves went on to lead Michigan State to the 2000 national championship, giving the Spartans their second title in program history.
With a ferocious non-conference schedule followed by a never-ending Big Ten slate, there are plenty of games and storylines to choose from for a top-five list.
Yet, through blood, sweat and tears, I was able to narrow it down to my five most anticipated games of the 2026-27 season.
No. 5 — Gonzaga
Dec. 19 | Acrisure Arena | Palm Desert, California
A battle between the two programs with the longest active NCAA Tournament streaks is always music to my ears.
Michigan State currently owns the nation's longest active NCAA Tournament streak at 28 consecutive appearances, while Gonzaga sits right behind the Spartans with 27.
The Spartans and Bulldogs do not face off often, with Gonzaga holding a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series. The most recent meeting came in 2022, when the Bulldogs escaped with a 64-63 victory over Michigan State aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln in San Diego.
Now the two programs will meet again on Dec. 19 at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, California, as part of the Acrisure Series. It will be the final major non-conference test before the Spartans turn their attention toward the heart of Big Ten play.
No. 4 — at Illinois
Feb. 5 | State Farm Center | Champaign, Illinois
The Spartans outlasted Illinois in overtime at the Breslin Center last season, 85-82. Michigan State also won the rematch in Champaign, 79-65, completing a season sweep of the Fighting Illini.
Now, the two teams meet again in Champaign, where the environment should be electric on a Friday night.
Illinois enters the season after reaching the 2026 Final Four, while Michigan State advanced to the Sweet 16. The Illini will have plenty of confidence heading into this matchup, but the Spartans will have a chance to make another statement on the road.
The Feb. 5 meeting will also come during a brutal stretch for Illinois, which will face Michigan State, Michigan and Purdue in a span of just eight days.
No. 3 — Duke
Nov. 10 | United Center | Chicago, Illinois
The games between Duke and Michigan State are always some of the best basketball has to offer.
Two blue-blood programs meeting on a neutral court in Chicago? Sign me up.
Unfortunately for the Spartans, the recent history has not gone their way. Duke leads the all-time series 16-4 and has won the last five meetings, with Michigan State's most recent victory coming in the 2019 NCAA Tournament when the Spartans defeated Zion Williamson and the Blue Devils in the Elite Eight.
Now the rivalry heads back to the Champions Classic, with Michigan State and Duke set to meet Nov. 10 at the United Center.
With both programs expected to enter the season among the nation's elite, this could be one of the defining games of Michigan State's non-conference schedule.
No. 2 — Arkansas
Nov. 26 | Little Caesars Arena | Detroit, Michigan
The Spartans are starting to follow suit with the Detroit Lions as they make their way toward another Thanksgiving showdown against one of the top teams in the country.
Last year, Michigan State opened the season against Arkansas and came away with a 69-66 victory at the Breslin Center. The Spartans won despite making just one 3-pointer the entire game, with Trey Fort accounting for that lone make.
Now the two teams meet again, this time on Thanksgiving Day in downtown Detroit.
Michigan State and Arkansas will tip off at 4:30 p.m. ET on Nov. 26 at Little Caesars Arena, following the Detroit Lions' Thanksgiving matchup with the Chicago Bears at Ford Field.
It is a perfect setting for another heavyweight matchup, and with the 2027 Final Four coming to Detroit, this game could even serve as an early glimpse at the level of basketball Michigan State will need to play when the postseason arrives.
No. 1 — Michigan
Feb. 13 at Michigan | Feb. 26 vs. Michigan
The two Michigan-Michigan State games are separated by just 13 days.
On Feb. 13, the Spartans will travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines. Less than two weeks later, on Feb. 26, Michigan will make the trip to East Lansing for the rematch at the Breslin Center.
The second matchup will be Michigan State's third-to-last regular-season game, making the rivalry even more intriguing as the Spartans head toward the postseason.

The Wolverines got the better of Michigan State last season, setting the stage for another chapter in one of college basketball's most heated rivalries.
