Football season is finally upon us, and this Friday, the Michigan State Spartans will take the field for the first time under new head coach Pat Fitzgerald.
On Friday night, September 4, at 8 p.m. ET, the Spartans will open their 2026 season against the Toledo Rockets at Spartan Stadium.
With the return of football, especially in today's day and age, comes the return of football betting. Before diving into predictions for this week's season opener, it's important to remember that gambling can be addictive. People should only gamble if they have the financial means to do so and the discipline to stop when necessary. Never bet more than you can afford to lose.
However, there's no escaping the overwhelming presence of sports betting today.
Whether you're watching a sporting event, listening to the radio, driving past billboards, or scrolling through social media, betting advertisements seem to be everywhere. Sports gambling has moved far beyond Las Vegas sportsbooks and questionable websites and has become a major part of mainstream sports culture.
With gambling now as prevalent as ever, there's little reason to pretend it isn't part of the modern sports landscape. Instead, we can approach it responsibly and have some fun making predictions along the way.
So today, we're taking a look at my early predictions for Michigan State vs. Toledo.
I'll have a full game prediction later this week, along with additional player props I like. But for now, let's get a head start by looking at the spread and over/under for Friday night's season opener.
As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of different sportsbooks available, so odds are always subject to change. However, most betting books currently have the lines set around:
Michigan State -10 (-110)
Toledo +10 (-110)
Over 46.5 (-110)
Under 46.5 (-110)
Expect a Battle Early
This game could be more competitive than some Michigan State fans expect.
Toledo consistently fields one of the better programs in the MAC and will enter Spartan Stadium looking to make an early statement. Meanwhile, Michigan State is coming off a disappointing 1-8 conference record but has undergone a massive overhaul, both on the roster and coaching staff.
Will that overhaul immediately turn into a perfect match made in heaven, with every player firing on all cylinders for Fitzgerald in Week One?
Possibly.
But it's far from guaranteed.
The Spartans appear to have the pieces necessary to build a successful football team. However, having the right pieces on paper and putting everything together on the field are two entirely different things.
Toledo will give Michigan State everything it has, and if the Rockets' continuity pays off early in the season, there's a legitimate chance they keep this game competitive well into the second half.
Why I Like the Over
I'm not giving away my final score prediction just yet, but both teams are capable of putting points on the board.
If Michigan State quarterback Alessio Milivojevic picks up where he left off last season, the Spartans could have themselves a big offensive night. Milivojevic closed out last season by leading Michigan State to 38 points against Maryland.
Could Michigan State put up another 30-burger to open the Pat Fitzgerald era?
I certainly think it's possible.
If the Spartans reach 30 points, Toledo would only need 17 points for the game to hit the over at 46.5.
That feels very achievable.
My Prediction
Michigan State -10 (-110)
Over 46.5 (-110)
I believe Milivojevic picks up right where he left off, while the addition of Cam Edwards helps provide a lethal rushing attack behind Michigan State's newly revamped offensive line.
I've already released three bold predictions for Week One, including predictions that Milivojevic and Edwards will each find the end zone twice against Toledo.
I believe this game will be competitive for much of the night, but Michigan State eventually pulls away. The Spartans' depth and talent advantage should become more apparent as the game progresses, and I could see a late touchdown pushing Michigan State past a 10-point victory and allowing the Spartans to cover the spread.
As for the total, I expect both offenses to contribute enough points to push this one over 46.5.
