Healthy and hungry, the hard-hitting defensive back looks to reclaim his dominant form under Pat Fitzgerald’s high-energy regime while anchoring a revamped Spartans defense as a vocal leader.
Today at Big Ten Media Day, it was time for Michigan State's players and head coach to take on one of their biggest tasks yet: the media.
The Spartans sent three representatives to Media Day: quarterback Alessio Milivojevic, linebacker Jordan Hall and defensive back Nikai Martinez.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Martinez for a few moments, where I was able to pick his brain about a few things we've heard from head coach Pat Fitzgerald and how his body is feeling heading into his senior season.
It didn't take long to figure out how Martinez's health was. After playing in just five games last season and recording only one game with double-digit tackles — his final appearance of the year — Martinez, who entered the season with high expectations, saw his campaign derailed by injuries.
So, being the hard-hitting reporter that I am, I went right for the gut-shot questions.
The first question for Nikai was simple:
"How are you feeling?"
He answered with a big smile and a quick, "I'm good."
From there, I followed up by saying that Spartan fans have extremely high expectations for him after what they saw two years ago.
"It was tough last year, obviously," I said. "Are you ready to take that next step?"
Martinez didn't hesitate.
He made sure to mention that he can't wait for fans to see the versatility he brings to the defense, showcasing that he can line up wherever he's needed.
"Yes, I'm really ready," Martinez said. "What we seen two years ago, I promise there'll be a lot more plays being made and just show my versatility."
Once we got an update on his health heading into the 2026 season, it was time to discuss the impact Fitzgerald has already made on the locker room despite being in East Lansing for only seven months.
I mentioned that Milivojevic had just talked about the energy Fitzgerald brings every time he addresses the team and asked Martinez if that same energy has trickled throughout the roster.
Martinez smiled before answering.
"Yes, it's already been in effect," Martinez said. "I think the big thing was when we started the 6:30 spring practices because, you know, 6:30 starting practice. So you're up at four or five in the morning and he's just high energy, jumping around. After you see that, you feed into that energy. You don't run away from it. You just embrace it. You're really grateful that somebody just cares as much as you do."
It's a theme that has consistently come up throughout Michigan State's offseason. Whether it's players, coaches or staff members, nearly everyone who has spoken about Fitzgerald has pointed to the same thing — his energy is contagious.
Finally, like the true Marvel fan that I am, I had to tie the first question I asked Fitzgerald earlier in the day to the final question I asked Martinez.
During Fitzgerald's opening statement, I asked him who had emerged as a vocal leader outside of Milivojevic and Hall. Without hesitation — within a millisecond — Martinez's name flew out of Fitzgerald's mouth.
Fitzgerald described Martinez as one of the glue guys on this football team.
So naturally, I wanted to know what hearing that from his head coach meant to him.
"It means the world to me," Martinez said. "I'm a very hard worker and I just try to put my best foot forward every day and don't let my highs get too high or my lows get too low. I always want to be someone who can help my team out, help anybody on the field or off. I just want to see the best of all my teammates and my brothers and see the best for everybody."
Those aren't just the words of someone looking to bounce back after an injury-filled season. They're the words of someone embracing a leadership role inside the locker room.
The glue guy, Nikai Martinez, is looking to have a major bounce-back season in 2026 while continuing to showcase his vocal leadership both on and off the field. If he can stay healthy, Spartan fans may finally get to see the version of Martinez they were expecting all along.
