Iowa's desperate fight for the tournament meets Michigan's dominance. Expect Stirtz to shine, big blocks, and a nail-biting finish.

As the Big Ten regular season enters its final days of the regular season, all eyes turn to Carver-Hawkeye Arena tonight for a clash that feels more like a heavyweight title fight than a standard conference finale. The #3 Michigan Wolverines (27-2, 17-1 B1G), having already secured the outright Big Ten title, are looking to cement their status as a national title favorite. Meanwhile, the Iowa Hawkeyes (20-9, 10-8 B1G) are fighting for survival, currently perched precariously on the NCAA Tournament bubble and desperate for a signature win.

While Michigan comes in as an 8-point favorite according to KenPom, Carver-Hawkeye is where Top-5 dreams often go to die. On Senior Night in Iowa City, expect the unexpected.

Here are three bold predictions for tonight's  showdown:

1. Bennett Stirtz Outduels Michigan’s Backcourt for a Career Night

Michigan’s defense has been suffocating this year, leading the Big Ten in opponent field goal percentage. However, Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz has been the engine of a Hawkeye offense that prioritizes elite ball security. On Senior Night, the veteran guard will find another gear.

Prediction: Stirtz will record the first 25-point, 10-assist double-double against the Wolverines this season. While Michigan’s Elliot Cadeau is an elite on-ball defender, Stirtz’s ability to navigate Ben McCollum’s high-motion offense will exploit Michigan’s tendency to commit fouls (ranking 13th in the B1G in foul shooting/avoidance). Expect Stirtz to live at the free-throw line and orchestrate a masterpiece in his final home game.

2. Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr. Combine for 8+ Blocks

The Wolverines’ frontcourt is arguably the most intimidating in college basketball. Aday Mara, the 7'3" Spanish sensation, leads the conference in blocks per game (2.6), but it’s the tandem with Morez Johnson Jr. that truly terrifies opponents.

Prediction: The "Twin Towers" will set a season-high for blocks in a single game. Iowa’s offense relies heavily on near-proximity scoring (averaging 75.7 PPG). They will try to challenge Michigan at the rim early to get Mara into foul trouble. It won't work. Mara and Johnson Jr. will turn the paint into a "no-fly zone," forcing the Hawkeyes to rely almost exclusively on perimeter shooting—a gamble that could backfire if Brendan Hausen isn't hitting.

3. The Game Will Be Decided by a Single Possession

Despite Michigan’s dominance this season, history tells us Iowa City is a house of horrors for the Maize and Blue. Michigan has won only two of their last five against Iowa, and their last meeting in Ann Arbor was an 85-83 nail-biter.

Prediction: This game will go to overtime or be decided by a buzzer-beater. Iowa is 14-2 at home this season. With their NCAA Tournament lives on the line and a sellout crowd behind them, they will play with a level of desperation Michigan hasn't seen since their early-season loss to Wisconsin. Michigan will lead for most of the second half, but a late Hawkeye surge will turn the final two minutes into a chaotic, possession-by-possession war.

Final Outlook

The Wolverines are playing for a #1 seed in the Big Dance; the Hawkeyes are playing just to get an invite. In a matchup of the Big Ten's best scoring offense (Michigan) against the Big Ten’s stingiest defense (Iowa), the clash of styles will be legendary. Whether the Wolverines’ talent wins out or the "Carver Magic" strikes again, this is must-watch television.
