Michigan ignited for five unanswered goals, overcoming a deficit to secure their fourth Big Ten Championship in a thrilling seven-goal victory.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — There is a specific kind of magic that settles over Yost Ice Arena during the postseason, a mixture of history, humidity, and high-stakes tension. On Saturday night, that atmosphere reached its pinnacle as the top-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team overcame a resilient Ohio State squad to secure a 7-3 victory, claiming their fourth Big Ten Tournament Championship in program history.

In the first-ever postseason conference final held on Ann Arbor ice, the Wolverines (28-7-1) proved why they entered the night as the nation’s No. 1 team. Despite trailing late in the second period, Michigan ignited for five unanswered goals, turning a nail-biter into a coronation and extending their dominant winning streak over the Buckeyes to six games.

A Back-and-Forth Battle

The evening began with the underdog Buckeyes (14-20-2) looking to play the role of spoiler. Ohio State drew first blood at the 8:18 mark of the opening frame, capitalizing on a power play just five seconds before it expired. It was a rare lapse for a Michigan penalty-kill unit that had been perfect throughout the tournament.

The Wolverines responded with veteran poise. Junior Garrett Schifsky leveled the score late in the first, dancing through a wall of Buckeye defenders to snap a wrist shot home. While the scoreboard read 1-1 after twenty minutes, the physical toll of the game was evident, with both teams trading heavy hits along the boards.

The second period mirrored the first in its see-saw nature. Will Horcoff gave Michigan its first lead of the night early in the frame, cleaning up a rebound off a Michael Hage shot. However, Ohio State refused to fade, capitalizing on a failed Michigan clearance to tie it at 2-2, and later reclaiming a 3-2 lead on another power-play conversion at 16:31.

The Turning Point

With momentum swinging toward the visitors, Michigan’s top-ranked power-play unit took the ice in the final minutes of the second. Captain T.J. Hughes found freshman Malcolm Spence in the paint for a thundering one-timer with just 42 seconds left in the period. That goal did more than just tie the game at 3-3; it broke the Buckeyes' resolve.

The third period belonged entirely to the Maize and Blue. After a crucial early penalty kill, T.J. Hughes—who was later named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player—poked home the eventual game-winner at the 8:19 mark.

Less than two minutes later, Jayden Perron delivered the goal of the night. On a man-advantage that lasted only six seconds, Perron took the puck from the point and wove through the entire Ohio State defense, finishing with a forehand deke that brought the Yost crowd to its feet. Further goals from Luca Fantilli and an empty-netter from Nick Moldenhauer put the finishing touches on the 7-3 blowout.

Historic Implications

The victory cements Michigan’s status as the gold standard of Big Ten hockey. The Wolverines improved to a staggering 13-0 all-time as the league’s second seed, a perfect record that spans all four of their tournament titles.

Beyond the team hardware, individual milestones littered the box score:

  • T.J. Hughes moved into a tie for 20th all-time in Michigan scoring with 175 career points.
  • Freshman goaltender Jack Ivankovic was named to the All-Tournament team after a 25-save performance, finishing the tournament with a 3-0 record.
  • Michigan saw four players named to the All-Tournament team: Hughes, Ivankovic, Perron, and Fantilli.

Looking Ahead

The celebration in Ann Arbor will be short-lived. On Sunday, March 22, the Wolverines will tune into the NCAA Hockey Selection Show at 3 p.m. on ESPNU. Boasting an NCAA-record 42nd tournament appearance, Michigan is expected to be the No. 1 overall seed in the national bracket for the first time since 2022.

If Saturday night was any indication, the road to the Frozen Four runs directly through the high-octane offense of the Wolverines.
