The star guard solidifies his commitment as a vocal leader, highlighting elite incoming freshmen and a dominant backcourt poised to chase a conference title this season.
Elliot Cadeau met with the media ahead of the team's upcoming European exhibition trip to Lithuania and Croatia, reflecting on a whirlwind offseason, his growth as a leader, and high expectations for the program heading into the new year.
When coaching changes and roster movement hit the program following a historic campaign, Cadeau stepped up as a stabilizing force. Recognizing the uncertainty felt across the locker room, he made an early decision to lock in his commitment and push to keep the group intact. The early days were undeniably chaotic, filled with players reevaluating their options, but Cadeau took it upon himself to instill confidence in his teammates. "We felt like we were two of the leaders of the team regardless of anything that happened," Cadeau said. "And when that happened, we felt like we needed to make it known that we were staying." For Cadeau, entering the transfer portal was never a consideration because, in his words, "This is my home. I feel like it's the best university in the world."
Continuity has been a major theme this summer. Cadeau noted that the current summer sessions and practices feel almost identical to the structure established under the previous staff. "It kind of feels the exact same," he noted. "The practices feel the exact same. They're kind of structured the same exact way. We're learning the same offensive, defensive, everything." While acknowledging the difficulty of comparing any roster to last year's squad, which he described as "the best college team of all time," Cadeau remains firm in his optimism. He firmly believes this group possesses the talent to win the conference title, driven by elite speed, perimeter shooting, and depth.
A major reason for that confidence stems from the incoming talent. Cadeau highlighted freshman Brandon McCoy, praising his remarkable athleticism and skill level. "I think Brandon is just one of the most athletic players I've played with," Cadeau said. "Very skilled. A great shooter. Mid-range. Three-point. I think he just has the whole package." Cadeau also touted the defensive instincts of his new teammate, joking that McCoy "does supernatural things" like catching lobs out of the air on the defensive end.
Cadeau also expressed immense confidence in the backcourt, stating, "I think me and Trey will be the best backcourt in college basketball." He noted that Trey is poised for a major breakout as he steps into a larger role. Additionally, 7 foot 3 stretch big Marcus Moller has impressed Cadeau in practice. "At 7'2", 7'3", being able to stretch the floor is pretty crazy," Cadeau said. "Him doing that, just consistently making three-pointers every practice, surprised me a lot."
On a personal level, Cadeau utilized the pre-draft process earlier this summer to prepare for his future. "I didn't know if I was going to stay in it or come out," he explained. "But I felt like regardless, it would just be beneficial for me. So, like, this year when I go into it, I won't go in blindly and I know exactly what to expect."
The upcoming overseas trip serves as a critical launchpad. Beyond the benefit of additional practice time to fast-track chemistry, the games will help players define their roles. "I think just everybody can learn their role on the team," Cadeau said. "It's kind of hard in practice. It's not defined, really... I feel like playing structured games will give everybody a feel of what they need to bring to the team exactly every night." While the team awaits further updates, including the potential return of veteran leader Roddy, Cadeau is focused on building the chemistry necessary for another championship run.
