The defensive mastermind behind Michigan’s historic national championship ascent takes the reins, aiming to sustain a culture defined by elite player development and nationally dominant defensive efficiency.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — In a move designed to maintain the momentum of the most successful stretch in program history, the University of Michigan has officially named Mike Boynton Jr. as the David and Meredith Kaplan Men's Basketball Head Coach. The announcement, made Friday by Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel, secures Boynton on a two-year contract to lead the Wolverines following his highly impactful stint as an assistant coach.
Elevating an Architect of Success
Boynton steps into the head coaching role perfectly aligned with the culture of excellence established in Ann Arbor. Over the last two seasons, he served as a vital component of a coaching staff that guided Michigan to a staggering 64-13 record.
During this brief but historic window, the Wolverines captured the 2025 Big Ten Tournament championship, clinched the 2026 Big Ten regular-season title, and ultimately cut down the nets as NCAA National Champions—the program’s first national title in 37 years.
"Mike is a veteran assistant with strong head coaching experience and a clear understanding of the standard we expect at Michigan," Athletic Director Warde Manuel said. "Over the past two seasons, he has been an invaluable member of our staff, bringing stability, leadership and perspective during an important period of success."
University President Domenico Grasso echoed those sentiments, emphasizing Boynton’s character and alignment with institutional values. "Coach Boynton has demonstrated exceptional leadership, unwavering integrity, and a deep commitment to the development of student-athletes throughout his career," Grasso noted.
Mastering the Blueprint: Defense and Draft Integrity
While Boynton’s title is new, his imprint on the Wolverines' historic 37-3 championship season in 2025-26 is undeniable. Serving as the team’s defensive coordinator, Boynton engineered a masterclass on the hardwood. Under his guidance, Michigan's defensive efficiency evolved rapidly:
2024-25 Season: Ranked 12th nationally in KenPom adjusted defensive efficiency.
2025-26 Season: Led the entire nation in defensive efficiency, anchoring a school-record 37-victory campaign.
Beyond his tactical defensive acumen, Boynton has earned a reputation as one of the country's elite player-development minds. In just two seasons in Ann Arbor, he helped mentor four first-round NBA Draft selections, highlighted by a historic showing in the 2026 NBA Draft where three Wolverines were taken in the lottery: Morez Johnson Jr. (No. 9), Yaxel Lendeborg (No. 11), and Aday Mara (No. 12). Alongside 2025 first-rounder Danny Wolf (No. 27), Boynton's development pipeline made Michigan just the fifth program since the expansion of the NBA Draft Lottery in 2004 to produce three lottery picks in a single draft.
A Proven Track Record
Before arriving in Ann Arbor in April 2024, Boynton amassed more than two decades of collegiate coaching experience. Most notably, he spent seven seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State, where he registered 119 wins and developed point guard Cade Cunningham into the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
A Brooklyn native, Boynton’s basketball roots run deep. He was a four-year letterwinner at South Carolina, playing in 125 games and earning SEC All-Tournament Team honors as a senior in 2004 before graduating with a degree in African-American Studies.
Endorsements from the Basketball Community
The appointment has drawn widespread praise from former players, colleagues, and program legends alike:
"You couldn't ask for a better person to lead Michigan basketball. Mike has poured everything he has into this program... There's nobody more deserving of this opportunity."
— Dusty May, Dallas Mavericks Head Coach
"Mike Boynton is an excellent coach who already has valuable experience as a head coach at the high major level. He absolutely is the right guy at the right time."
— John Beilein, Retired Michigan Men's Basketball Coach
Former consensus All-American and current Golden State Warriors forward Yaxel Lendeborg credited Boynton's personalized mentorship for his rapid rise. "Coach Boynton has been there for me since day one. He challenged me, believed in me and always pushed me to be my best," Lendeborg said. Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham added, "Michigan is getting an outstanding coach, but even more importantly, they're getting an incredible person."
With a proven championship foundation already underneath him, Boynton’s tenure begins with a clear mission: keeping Michigan at the absolute pinnacle of college basketball.
