The Wolverines look to flip elite Indianapolis safety Errol Kerns III, a track-star athlete and Miami (OH) commit bringing explosive speed and downhill hitting to Ann Arbor.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The recruiting trail never stops, and for the Michigan Wolverines, the pursuit of elite defensive talent has led them directly to the doorstep of a committed prospect in the Class of 2027. Errol Kerns III, a standout defensive back from Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis, has officially locked in a visit to Ann Arbor for the weekend of June 12-14, signaling a significant development in his recruitment.
A Rising Star from the Circle City
Kerns is a highly-regarded three-star prospect. Standing 5-11 and weighing in at 195 pounds, he possesses the ideal frame for a modern collegiate safety. His "Prospect Info" profile highlights his status as the No. 14 ranked player in the state of Indiana and the No. 73 safety nationally according to the 247Sports Composite.
Kerns isn't just a football player; he is a premier all-around athlete. According to the "Scouting Report" he also competes in wrestling and track and field. His explosiveness is verified by elite numbers: a personal best of 10.78 seconds in the 100m dash and a 22-10 long jump during his junior campaign. This "top-end juice" makes him a home-run threat not just on defense, but also as a kickoff returner.
The Current Commitment Landscape
Currently, Kerns is a Hard Commit to Miami (OH), having pledged his services to the RedHawks on April 24, 2026. However, his recruitment has exploded since that commitment. Power Four interest include offers from Kentucky, Northwestern, and Illinois State.
The Wolverines officially extended an offer to Kerns on May 9, 2026, just days after witnessing his prowess during a local showcase workout. Since that offer, the interest between Kerns and the Michigan staff has moved at light speed. While his status is still listed as "Cool" regarding his interest level in other schools, the confirmation of an official visit suggests the "Big House" is making a serious push to flip the talented Hoosier State product.
What Michigan Sees in Kerns
Scouts have described Kerns as a "talented, hard-hitting thumper" who displays tremendous range and athletic ability. His highlights often show him flying to the football, operating as an exceptional run defender who can hit downhill with authority.
"Kerns is a very good downhill-hitting defensive back with outstanding closing speed... He adds even more value as a great kickoff returner who is a legitimate home-run threat with the ball in his hands." — Bryan Ault, Prep Redzone Scout
The Battle for the Midwest
The visit scheduled for June 12-14 will be a pivotal moment for both Kerns and the Michigan 2027 recruiting class. For Miami (OH), the challenge is now holding on to a player whose stock has risen to "blue-blood" levels seemingly overnight.
For Michigan, the goal is clear: convince one of Indiana’s best that his future lies in the Big Ten. With his 10.78 speed and physical style of play, Kerns fits the mold of the versatile defensive backs that have flourished in the Wolverines' system.
As the summer recruiting cycle heats up and kerns will have much to think about, all eyes will be on Ann Arbor in mid-June to see if the Wolverines can secure a commitment from the Lawrence Central star.
