Wolverine coaches are trekking to Mississippi to land a versatile four-star playmaker with track speed and elite production before his high-stakes commitment on May 16th.

BRANDON, MS — With the 2027 recruiting cycle heating up, the Michigan Wolverines coaching staff is making it clear that distance is no obstacle when it comes to elite talent. Offensive Coordinator Jason Beck and Running Backs Coach Tony Alford recently traveled to Brandon, Mississippi, to check in on four-star standout Tyson Robinson. The visit comes at a pivotal moment, as Robinson—one of the most coveted tailbacks in the nation—is slated to make his commitment on May 16th.

A Blue-Chip Profile in the Magnolia State

Tyson Robinson is not just another recruit; he is a verified playmaker with a resume that has attracted nearly 40 scholarship offers from the nation's premier programs. Standing at 5-9.5 and weighing 199 pounds, Robinson possesses a rare blend of compact power and track-verified speed.

As a freshman, he showcased his raw athleticism by posting an 11.15-second 100-meter dash and a 23.38-second 200-meter dash. That speed translated immediately to the gridiron during a breakout sophomore campaign in 2024. Helping lead Brandon High School to a 12-2 record and an appearance in Mississippi’s 7A title game, Robinson put up gaudy numbers:

Rushing: 176 carries for 1,295 yards (7.4 YPC) and 24 touchdowns.

Receiving: 42 catches for 668 yards (15.9 YPC) and 10 touchdowns.

Despite missing four games due to injury during his junior season, Robinson still eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark, finishing with 1,050 yards and nine total touchdowns. His versatility as a "do-it-all" back has led scouts to compare his explosiveness to elite SEC archetypes.

The Michigan Connection: Alford and Beck

The Wolverines' pursuit of Robinson is spearheaded by Tony Alford, who was retained by head coach Kyle Whittingham for his prowess in developing NFL-caliber backs. Alford has a long-standing reputation as one of the best recruiters in the country, having recently secured five-star talent Savion Hiter for the 2026 class.

Alford’s visit to Brandon in late January set the foundation, but the addition of Jason Beck to the recruiting trail signals a high level of priority. Beck, known for orchestrating prolific offenses, views Robinson as a perfect fit for a scheme that prizes running backs who can impact the passing game.

The Final Stretch

While Michigan is surging, the competition is fierce. Robinson has already secured official visits to Miami, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and Alabama. Currently, regional powers like Mississippi State and Tennessee are considered heavy contenders, but Michigan’s recent "surge" has analysts watching the Wolverines closely as the May 16th deadline approaches.

For Michigan, landing a player of Robinson's caliber would further solidify the "running back university" identity they have cultivated. There are no games at the Big house that Robinson can attend before making his official decision, so this visit does hopefully have a high impact on the rising star. With the commitment date just days away, the Maize and Blue faithful are waiting to see if the personal touch from Beck and Alford was enough to lure the Mississippi star to Ann Arbor.
