Tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham takes the hunt for elite talent to New Jersey, targeting a massive Crimson Tide pledge to fill a critical void in Ann Arbor.
The recruiting trail never sleeps, and for the Michigan Wolverines, a "committed" status is often viewed as a starting line rather than a finish line. In a bold move that signals Michigan’s aggressive pursuit of elite talent, Tight Ends coach Freddie Whittingham recently made a high-profile stop in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. His mission? To check in on—and potentially flip—one of the crown jewels of Alabama’s 2027 class: Colt Lumpris.
Lumpris, a standout athlete at The Lawrenceville School, has been a firm pledge to the Crimson Tide since December 9, 2025. However, the Wolverines are making it clear that they have no intention of backing down in the race for the versatile playmaker.
The Prototype Athlete
Standing at a towering 6'6" and weighing in at 249 pounds, Lumpris is the definition of a "matchup nightmare." While categorized as an athlete (ATH), his frame and skill set translate perfectly to the modern hybrid Tight End/Wide Receiver role that Michigan has utilized so effectively in recent seasons.
Currently ranked as the No. 16 Tight End in the country and the No. 6 prospect in the state of New Jersey by the 247Sports Composite, Lumpris possesses the rare combination of size and fluid athleticism. He has the strength to hold his own on the line of scrimmage and the speed to stretch the seam, making him an ideal fit for a Michigan offense that prides itself on physical, multi-tight end sets.
Why Michigan is Pushing Hard
The Wolverines' interest in Lumpris isn't just about adding talent; it's about addressing a critical roster need. Looking at the current depth chart and recruiting board, Michigan’s roster outlook for the position shows only one player currently on the roster and zero other commits for the upcoming cycle.
In contrast, Alabama’s roster management is always tight, and while they currently have Lumpris in the fold, the Wolverines are pitching a much clearer path to early playing time. Freddie Whittingham, known for his technical prowess and ability to develop NFL-caliber tight ends, is leading the charge. By personally visiting Lawrenceville, Whittingham is sending a message: Lumpris is a "must-have" priority for the Maize and Blue.
The "Flip" Factor
Recruiting a committed player is a delicate dance of persistence and timing. Lumpris has already scheduled a visit to Ann Arbor for June 19, a date that is now circled in red on the Michigan recruiting calendar. This visit will follow his trips to Alabama (May 29), Penn State (June 5), and Texas A&M (June 12).
The Wolverines have several factors working in their favor:
The Pro Model: Michigan’s consistent use of the Tight End in both the passing and run-blocking game is a major selling point for a player of Lumpris' stature.
Proximity: While Alabama is a national powerhouse, the pull of staying in the Northeast/Midwest footprint can sometimes play a factor as signing day nears.
Roster Opportunity: With few bodies currently in the TE room, Lumpris could see the field in Ann Arbor much sooner than he might in Tuscaloosa.
A Battle of Titans
The recruitment of Colt Lumpris is quickly becoming a classic Big Ten vs. SEC showdown. While Lumpris remains "Cool" on Michigan according to recent interest levels, the face-to-face time with Whittingham is designed to move the needle to "Warm" before his official visit in June.
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff certainly won't let their New Jersey prize walk away without a fight, but Michigan's staff is proving they are willing to go into any territory to secure the best talent in the nation.
As the summer circuit approaches, all eyes will be on Lawrenceville. If Whittingham and the Wolverines can build enough momentum during the June 19 visit, we might just see a seismic shift in the 2027 recruiting rankings. For now, the hunt is on, and Michigan is running at full speed.
