Michigan will host Indiana this weekend in a game with a lot of interesting story lines.

While the focus will be on what happens Saturday afternoon, Michigan and Indiana have a  history that dates back to 1900. The Wolverines enter this year's matchup with an all-time record of 62-11 against Indiana, including an home record of 41-7.

Michigan has not lost to Indiana very many times over the last 120+ years, but the Hoosiers didn't have Curt Cignetti back then. Michigan is actually 0-1 in its most recent matchup against IU, which means Cignetti only knows one thing when it comes to Michigan — winning. Michigan has certainly dominated the series, but Indiana has been the better team as of late.

Michigan's longest winning streak in the series is 24 from 1988 to 2019. For Indiana, it's just two, when they won back-to-back games back in 1944 and 1945.

Last Meeting

Michigan suffered a frustrating 20-15 loss to No. 8 Indiana in Bloomington on November 9, 2024, falling to 5-5 on the season.

The Wolverines struggled offensively in the first half, falling behind 17-3 before mounting a comeback after halftime. Quarterback Davis Warren and the Michigan offense found some rhythm, with running back Kalel Mullings scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown to cut Indiana's lead to 17-15. However, a failed two-point conversion and an inability to capitalize on late opportunities ultimately doomed Michigan.

Despite a strong second-half defensive performance, the Wolverines couldn't complete the comeback, allowing Indiana to improve to a historic 10-0.

Recent History

Over the last five meetings, Michigan is 3-2 against Indiana.

2024: Michigan 15, Indiana 20

2023: Michigan 52, Indiana 7

2022: Michigan 31, Indiana 10

2021: Michigan 29, Indiana 7

2020: Michigan 21, Indiana 38

When you look at the overall record, really at any time during the history of series, this is one of the most lopsided "rivalries" in the Big Ten. Michigan was a powerhouse program for a long time, while Indiana is very new to these levels of success. Curt Cignetti has certainly raised Indiana's football program to new levels, but Michigan is Michigan and they have dominated the Hoosiers through the years.

Michigan's most significant victory over Indiana is arguably its 20-10 win in 1987, which started a remarkable 24-game winning streak over the Hoosiers that lasted until 2020.

In that game, under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines relied on a strong defensive performance to keep Indiana's offense in check. The victory was particularly impressive considering Indiana finished the season 8-4 and earned a Peach Bowl appearance under head coach Bill Mallory. Although Michigan finished the 1987 campaign with an 8-4 record as well, its win over Indiana helped establish a stretch of dominance in the series that lasted more than three decades, finally ending in 2020.

What History Says About Saturday

Of course, past results don't determine what happens on Saturday in Ann Arbor. The two teams entering this year's matchup are different from ones that played in all previous matchups.

Michigan is coming off a quarterback change and a tough win over Penn State after dropping two games in a row. For Indiana, they will be hitting the field after a loss for the first time. There's a lot of intrigue in this one even though most expect the Hoosiers to win.

The history between these programs adds another layer to Saturday's matchup. Michigan is hoping it can find more offensive success with a new signal caller under center, while Indiana is looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss to Ohio State.
