Focusing on internal execution over scouting, the Wolverines head overseas to test a revamped roster, spotlighting Oscar Goodman’s expanded role and freshman Marcus Moller impressive return to form.
The Michigan basketball program is packed and ready to embark on an international tour that will see the Wolverines compete in Croatia and Lithuania. Before stepping onto the plane, head coach Mike Boynton Jr addressed the media, giving fans a transparent look at where the team stands following summer workouts.
While foreign tours offer valuable game action against seasoned European professionals, Boynton clarified that the wins and losses abroad take a back seat to team building and tactical experiments taking place behind closed doors.
"Yeah, it is going to be a great opportunity for this group to spend some time together and have a chance to play some games and see the things that we have been working on all summer," Boynton said. "You know, how they actually pan out and work or not. If there are things we need to adjust when we get back, we will have some time to do that before we get to real practice."
With European rosters constantly shifting late in the summer, Michigan's coaching staff has taken a distinct approach to scouting. Rather than attempting to analyze constantly changing opponent lineups, the focus is strictly on internal execution.
"None," Boynton responded when asked how much advance preparation was done on overseas competition. "The team's rosters are kind of in flux. This time of year is a unique time... I do not want to spend a whole lot of time giving our guys information that is incorrect. So we really focus on ourselves for the most part."
The extra summer practices granted for foreign tours have proven crucial for establishing new roles, especially for returning players expected to step into bigger positions.
"Yeah, it has been really helpful. Just, you know, this team, you know, totally different, right?" Boynton noted. "In terms of the pieces and even the roles for the guys who are returning."
Among those returning players is center Oscar Goodman, who spent the previous season learning behind high level upperclassmen and is now primed for a major bump in responsibility.
"I think a guy like Oscar, who is probably, in terms of our program, has experience as anybody we have, including even Trey & Elliott," Boynton said. "He was here. He has been here longer than they have. But now, you know, he has not really been out there in a meaningful role for our group. And I expect that to change this season."
The trip also serves as a trial run for fresh arrivals. Freshman big man Marcus Moller has generated significant internal buzz due to his perimeter skill set, coming back strong after overcoming cancer treatments prior to arriving on campus.
"I tried the best I could to lower the expectations as far as possible and knowing that his medical, when he was coming in, dealing with the cancer," Boynton explained. "And so because of that, I think I am probably a bit more positively impressed by him as I have with anybody... He does not seem like he has missed a beat. And obviously his size, the skill level is real."
Michigan will travel overseas missing two contributors due to rehabilitation. Frontcourt pieces Jalen Reed and Lincoln Cosby will not see action during the trip, though Reed received an encouraging update from doctors recently.
"He will not play on the trip," Boynton said regarding Reed. "But we did get a pretty positive report on him last week from the doctors that he is way ahead of schedule."
With off court sightseeing in Croatia planned alongside high level foreign matchups, Michigan heads overseas looking to construct a tight knit foundation for the upcoming campaign.
