The most historic rivalry in college hockey added another legendary chapter on Friday night as the No. 1 University of Michigan defeated No. 2 Michigan State, 4–3, in a sudden-death overtime thriller at a raucous Yost Ice Arena. In a battle between the nation's top two teams, it was junior forward Jayden Perron who played the hero, burying his third overtime game-winning goal of the season to secure a vital victory in the Big Ten title race.
One of the prettiest goals of the game however has to go to Kienan Draper, and it came when they needed it the most. Down Shorthanded this goal came a crucial point tying the game up at three and completely swinging the momentum into the Wolverines Direction. In fact, it got so loud each time Michigan scored, but in specifically when draper lit the lamp, the television broadcast audio would completely cut out. Yost Ice Arena at that point was a fortress for the Wolverines, and there was no way that Brandon Naurato and company were going to let Sparty in and ruin the comeback.
In comes the heroics of superstar Jayden Perron. It felt as if Perron was buzzing his last two to three shifts on the ice, so its no surprise that he was the one to claim hero.
Perron’s Overtime Magic Stuns Spartans
Entering the 350th meeting between these two programs, the stakes could not have been higher, with Michigan holding only a one-point lead over the Spartans in the conference standings. The game lived up to the billing, featuring back-and-forth action that saw Michigan State take a 3–1 lead into the third period behind goals from Shane Vansaghi and Owen West.
However, the Wolverines’ nation-leading offense refused to be silenced. Michigan surged back in the final frame, eventually forcing the extra period in front of a deafening home crowd. Just minutes into the 3-on-3 overtime session, Jayden Perron showcased why he has become the most feared clutch performer in the country. Capitalizing on a defensive breakdown, Perron found space and fired a shot past MSU goaltender Trey Augustine to end the contest.
The goal marked Perron’s third overtime winner of the 2025–26 campaign—following similar heroics against Minnesota and Ohio State earlier this year—solidifying his reputation as Michigan’s ultimate finisher. Perron now has 26 points on the season, continuing his breakout year alongside team captain T.J. Hughes.
Preview: The Duel in the D
