Michigan's Wolverines shatter a 50-year barrier, achieving an unprecedented perfect Big Ten road record, echoing legends while forging their own destiny.

For half a century, the 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers stood alone. Bob Knight’s legendary squad, the last to finish an entire Division I season perfect, was also the last Big Ten team to navigate a full conference road schedule without a single blemish. That changed on Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

With a gritty 71-68 victory over Iowa, the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines (28-2, 18-1 Big Ten) officially became the first team in 50 years to go undefeated on the road in Big Ten play. While the 1976 Hoosiers went 9-0 as visitors in an 18-game league slate, Dusty May’s Wolverines one-upped them in volume, finishing a perfect 10-0 on the road in the modern 20-game conference format.

A Narrow Escape in Iowa City

The historic feat did not come easily. Michigan, which entered the game averaging nearly 90 points per contest, was held to its lowest scoring output of the conference season. Turnovers plagued the Wolverines early, with eight giveaways in the first eight minutes allowing the Hawkeyes to jump out to a lead.

The game featured 14 lead changes and eight ties, including a dramatic final two minutes. After Iowa used an 11-1 run to tie the game at 64, sophomore center Aday Mara proved to be the hero. Mara banked in a desperation shot as the shot clock expired to regain the lead, and then converted a clutch lob with 43 seconds remaining to put Michigan ahead for good.

"It just shows how together we are as a group," said forward Yaxel Lendeborg, who finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. "We could have easily fell into the outside noise, but we stuck together, we kept our composure, and we made winning plays when we needed to".

By the Numbers: Michigan's Historic Road Run

The Wolverines' path to 10-0 was a tour de force across the Midwest and beyond. They secured double-digit wins at Maryland, UCLA, and Oregon, but also showed the mettle to win "ugly" in hostile environments like Mackey Arena and the Breslin Center.

The Dusty May Era Reaches New Heights

In just his second season in Ann Arbor, Dusty May has transformed a program that was in the Big Ten cellar into a national title favorite. Beyond the road record, this Michigan team has already clinched the outright Big Ten regular-season championship and tied the conference record for total league wins (18).

"When we're on the road and it's just us... I feel like we just all come together," guard Roddy Gayle Jr. noted earlier this season. "We know that we don't have the crowd for Maize Rage, so we gotta lean on each other".

What’s Next

The Wolverines return to Crisler Center for their regular-season finale on Sunday against rival Michigan State. A win would make them the first team in Big Ten history to finish a 20-game schedule with 19 conference victories. Following the finale, Michigan will head to Chicago as the No. 1 seed for the Big Ten Tournament at the United Center.
