Wolverines excel on and off the court. Seven men's basketball players achieve Academic All-Big Ten honors, balancing demanding coursework with championship-level play.

The University of Michigan has always prided itself on the "student" portion of the student-athlete title, but the 2025-26 Academic All-Big Ten selections released today, March 18, 2026, prove that the Wolverines are currently operating at a historic level of excellence.

As the Big Ten Conference announced its winter honors, a staggering 96 Michigan student-athletes were recognized, with the men’s basketball program placing seven key contributors on the list. In an era where the transfer portal and professional aspirations often dominate the conversation, these seven players have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (with many exceeding the 3.7 mark for the current academic year) while leading Michigan to a dominant 19-1 conference record and a regular-season title.

The 2026 Men's Basketball Academic Honorees

The list of men's basketball players earning Academic All-Big Ten honors today represents a perfect cross-section of the roster, from graduate leaders to rising sophomores:

The "Double-Threat" Stars

What makes this year’s academic list particularly impressive is the overlap between classroom performance and on-court dominance. Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr., both of whom were named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team earlier this month, have proven they can lock down opponents and their coursework simultaneously. Mara, who also took home Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors, has successfully navigated his junior year as a Spanish major while emerging as one of the nation's elite shot-blockers.

Similarly, Morez Johnson Jr., an All-Big Ten Second Team selection (Media), continues to show why he is the future of the program. Balancing the physical toll of a Big Ten interior season with the academic rigors of a premier university is no small feat for a sophomore.

Graduate Leadership

The inclusion of Nimari Burnett and Will Tschetter highlights the "Master" level of discipline required at this level. Both players are pursuing advanced degrees—Burnett in Social Work and Tschetter in Environment & Sustainability. Tschetter, who was also Michigan's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for 2026, has become the program's gold standard for "doing things the right way."

A Banner Year for Michigan Athletics

While the men’s team celebrated seven honorees, the women’s basketball program matched that total with seven recipients of their own, including stars Syla Swords and Olivia Olson, both of whom were First-Team All-Big Ten selections on the court.

The academic success of these programs provides a necessary backdrop to the athletic hardware. Under head coach Dusty May, who was named the 2026 Big Ten Coach of the Year, the program has fostered an environment where the "Leaders and Best" mantra is lived out daily.

Why This Matters in 2026

In the current landscape of college sports, these academic milestones are vital. They serve as a reminder that even as players like Yaxel Lendeborg (the 2026 Big Ten Player of the Year) chase national championships and NBA dreams, the foundational goal of a University of Michigan education remains paramount. For players like Charlie May and Harrison Hochberg, these accolades are the culmination of years of late-night study sessions in the Stephen M. Ross Academic Center, often following cross-country flights from road games.
