Michigan lands five-star EDGE Carter Meadows. This game-wrecker promises an immediate impact and long-term defensive dominance for the Wolverines.

National Signing Day has delivered a monumental win for the Michigan Wolverines, officially securing the signature of Carter Meadows, a Five-Star Plus+ EDGE rusher from Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C. Meadows, who has been a rock-solid commit since June 29, 2025, is the headlining piece of the 2026 recruiting class for Head Coach Sherrone Moore and is expected to be a program-defining player on the defensive side of the ball.

An Elite Defensive Specimen

Meadows, who stands at 6-foot-6.5 and around 235 pounds, is not just a highly-ranked prospect; he is considered by major recruiting services to be one of the best overall prospects in the 2026 cycle. According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, he is the No. 6 overall prospect and the No. 2 EDGE in the class. His jump in the rankings throughout his senior season reflects his continued development, where his combination of physical traits and athleticism has analysts labeling him a "game-wrecker."

His profile is that of a modern, elite pass rusher:

• Exceptional Length: The 6-foot-6 frame, often described as "long-limbed" and "spider-like," allows him to run the arc against opposing offensive tackles and create immediate issues with his reach.

• Athletic Background: Meadows' athleticism stems from a background that included Division I basketball interest, giving him a rare flexibility, agility, and an explosive first step that translates directly to the football field.

• High Motor: He is known for staying active in pursuit and has the motor and effort required to close gaps on quarterbacks and running backs.

The Impact on the Wolverine Program

The signing of Meadows signals a powerful continuation of Michigan's commitment to building dominance in the trenches, particularly on defense. The program has historically excelled at developing defensive linemen, and Meadows is viewed as the latest high-upside player who will thrive in that system.

1. Immediate Pass Rush Help: While he is still developing the technical aspects of the position, his physical specs and explosive ability mean he could offer early value as a third-down pass rusher. His ability to "dip and build speed around the corner" could earn him snaps sooner rather than later.

2. Long-Term Versatility and Upside: As he develops and adds strength, Meadows is projected to settle in as an even-front defensive end, but his versatility is key. His length and athleticism also give him the potential to work as a hybrid-style rusher or even offer value as an interior rusher on passing downs. Analysts believe that his ceiling is that of an early-round NFL Draft pick if he embraces the weight room and coaching.

3. Recruiting Statement: Securing Meadows, who chose Michigan over other major programs including South Carolina, Ohio State, and Penn State, is a significant recruiting victory. It underscores the ability of Coach Moore's staff, particularly defensive line coach Lou Esposito, to land top-tier talent and uphold the program's tradition of defensive excellence.

Culture and Commitment

Meadows’ decision was cemented after his official visit to Ann Arbor in late June, where he felt a strong connection to the team's atmosphere. He cited a "mix of on the field, off the field things" and noted that the culture he felt in the building was "different." For Meadows, joining a program with Michigan’s "history of winning and tradition" to uphold its "standard of excellence in all walks of life" was the ultimate motivator.

Carter Meadows is not just a signee; he is the kind of elite, top-tier talent that Michigan will build its future defense around, carrying the potential to become an absolute game-wrecker in the Big Ten.
