Which numbers stuck out in Mizzou basketball's win over Mississippi State cover image

These numbers, for better or for worse, are worth noticing.

COLUMBIA — Mizzou basketball steamrolled Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon, handling the Bulldogs wire-to-wire for an 88-64 win in Starkville. The Tigers now move to 20-9 on the season and 10-6 in Southeastern Conference play.

Here's which numbers stuck out following the win.

Five

There's two reasons the number five sticks out from this game — one positive and one negative.

Starting with the positive, Missouri had five scorers reach double-figures in its 88-point offensive outburst. Mark Mitchell led the team with 17 points, Shawn Phillips Jr. scored an SEC-high 16, Anthony Robinson II dropped a bounce-back 13 points, while T.O. Barrett and Trent Pierce each scored 10.

The Tigers are clearly capable of scoring high-quantity point totals in a variety of ways — their second leading scorer, Jayden Stone, scored just eight points on 1-for-5 shooting and the offense still thrived. Missouri's versatility down the stretch has been impressive.

The negative five, however, comes from Barrett. The starting point guard racked up five turnovers in 24 minutes, matching his assist total. While Barrett's play has been undeniably positive since entering the starting lineup, the turnovers are an area in which he's struggled in.

Barrett has logged four or more turnovers in five of his 16 conference games and has logged more turnovers than assists in six of 16 appearances. Every possession matters, even more so in March, and Barrett can't have high-turnover outings in postseason matchups.

83.3

That's the number Missouri shot from the free-throw line, believe it or not. The Tigers sunk 20 of their 24 free throws in Starkville, including a perfect 6-for-6 from Phillips and 5-for-5 from Stone.

The number marks the Tigers' third-best single-game percentage of the season, second-best single-game percentage of conference play and best single-game percentage in a game with 15 or more attempts.

Missouri finally taking advantage of free points is just one of a few signs pointing toward the Tigers perfecting their tango at the perfect time.

Four

With the victory, Mizzou is now the No. 4 seed in the SEC. The Tigers sit atop of a three-way tiebreaker between themselves, Tennessee and Kentucky — both of which Missouri beat — as the trio of programs will be jockeying for postseason position in the coming week.

Directly above Missouri is Arkansas, who has just a one-game lead over the Tigers and will come to town for a rematch at 11 a.m. Saturday. Along with taking on the Razorbacks on Saturday, Missouri will travel to Norman to play the 5-11 Oklahoma Sooners.

Missouri now controls its own destiny for a potential double-bye in the SEC Tournament, which begins March 11.
