Armed with a refined physique and a "mad scientist" defensive scheme, the veteran edge rusher enters fall camp determined to elevate Nebraska beyond consecutive winning seasons.
LINCOLN — Cam Lenhardt is ready for what was supposed to definitively be his final season of college football.
Instead, the passage of 5-for-5 means the defensive end could potentially play two more seasons. But the time for deciding on a fifth season won't come for a few more months.
"Just trying to get into, when I get to that bridge, cross it then," Lenhardt said. "It's a blessing to have that extra year."
Lenhard said the blessing comes from a potential extra year of being able to develop under Matt Rhule. Well before that decision needs to be made, he will lead a defensive line room into year four of the Rhule era. It comes after a summer of progress.
"I got faster, stronger. (Strength coach) Campbell has been putting us through it in the weight room," Lenhardt said. "This offseason has been probably the most grittiest offseason I've ever had here."

Not only does the 2026 team hope to have more grit and the ability to handle tough situations better, but the defense comes in with a new scheme under new defensive coordinator Rob Aurich. Lenhard said he loves the changes.
"I think we got the right guys for it. I love learning it. (Edges) Coach Manning has been helping the edges dive in deep and understand it," Lenhardt said.
Manning worked with Aurich at San Diego State before the pair were part of a new wave of assistants coming to Lincoln in the offseason. Lenhardt says the new DC is a "mad scientist."
"He's a genius," Lenhardt said. "It's the way he teaches (the scheme) to you and breaks it down for us. Sometimes he'll come in with the edges, and he'll break it down in a way that he sees it."

"Staying in Selleck, you know it's time for camp," Lenhardt said. "It helps you to lock in and be like, 'we got ball ahead of us.' For me, it's more of a mindset thing. And I think the guys genuinely enjoy it now. You're with each other all day long."
Camp will run most of the month, with September bringing the season. Nebraska is coming off back-to-back 7-6 seasons. That's something Rhule said at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago that he didn't come to Lincoln to do, which Lenhardt agrees with.
"We got goals as a team," Lenhard said. "He says it, and we go out there, and we do it. It's just him setting the standard."
