LINCOLN — After suffering the first loss of the season at the hands of No. 7 Indiana, Oregon Week is officially here for Nebraska football.
Head coach Matt Rhule met with the media ahead of Monday's practice. Here is what he had to say.
Angry After Indiana
Rhule opened his time at the mic by calling last Saturday a "disappointing day for us not finding a way to win that game."
"We're certainly disappointed, but not discouraged," Rhule said. "We also understand that that's what it looks like. You have to not play really well for 55 minutes; you have to play well for 60."
Matt Rhule | Kenny Larabee, KLINThe team watched the tape back on Sunday. Rhule said the coaches and players know they need to be "or two plays better."
"I think you have a team that's angry, knows that they let one get away," Rhule said.
Rhule said he stressed to his team not to live in a world of being close or if only.
"Just get a little bit better," Rhule said.
The Analytics
Rhule was asked about a couple of decisions from Saturday's loss to Indiana. First, it was the 4th-and-9 from the Nebraska 44 with 4:47 to play, which resulted in a turnover on downs.
"I followed the analytics," Rhule said. "The analytics said to go up until 4th-and-10. I just felt like I was going to follow the analytics and put the ball in Anthony’s (Colandrea) hands."
Anthony Colandrea | Kenny Larabee, KLINWhen asked later how he grows as a coach when evaluating the analytics compared to how results have played out before, Rhule said he doesn't base something being the right or wrong call only if the result was positive.
"We go back and look at everything we do and say, 'Should we have done this? Should we not have done that?' I wouldn't even think twice about that 4-and-9 again," Rhule said.
Rhule added that he doesn't use analytics very often, but he listens to them and goes with where he believes the team is at.
As for what the analytics say, they also have a preference for going for two when down by five in the fourth quarter. When that instance came up on Saturday, Indiana came out with the offense and was not going to kick the extra point.
"We called timeout on the 2-point conversion. (The defense) felt like when they were coming out, they knew the play that they were going to get. We practiced it. I utilized a timeout there, which I don't really want to do, but it just felt like a crucial down," Rhule said.
Late Night in Eugene
The kickoff time this week is impacting how Nebraska attacks the entire week.
"We have a big week of work to go on the road and go into that environment, that crowd noise. It's obviously a late, late, late game. I've never coached a game that late," Rhule said.
Kickoff is set for 10 p.m. CT on FOX. This will be the first time since 1972 that a Husker game played on the continental U.S. kicks off at or after 10 p.m. CT.
"It just can't be a factor," Rhule said. "We can't allow it to be a factor."
Jamal Rule | Kenny Larabee, KLINThe team will leave on Friday and come back right after the game. This week, the staff will try and push the body clocks later to be ready for the late night. Some of that will include asking the players to go to bed a little bit later throughout the week.
Practices all week will also be pushed back two hours, with meetings moved back to 4 p.m. and be on the field at 6. Still, Rhule said the time is the time; the game will still need to be played between the lines.
"We'll adjust to it; we'll prepare for it, but it's going to come down to blocking and tackling," Rhule said.
Oregon's Quarterback Situation
Oregon's quarterback situation is one to watch this entire week.
Starter Dante Moore went down a few weeks ago with a concussion. That led to former Husker Dylan Raiola playing electric off the bench against USC. He then started against UCLA and was benched for Brock Thomas in the second half.
Moore's health and availability are still in question. So is the depth chart order for Raiola and Thomas.
"We’re preparing for all three quarterbacks,” Rhule said. “I have a lot of respect for Dante. Their offense is their offense. They do a great job of stressing you with zone reads and RPO’s and different run schemes."
Rhule added that the biggest difference among the quarterbacks is who possesses a zone-read running threat or a quarterback draw threat. As Husker fans know, that isn't necessarily Raiola, who should still be considered the starter for Saturday until more is known about Moore's situation.
Other Notes
- The place-kicking operation has had issues all season, with Kyle Cunanan sitting at 4-for-8 so far. Rhule said he is erring on the side of going for it, not necessarily out of confidence or lack of confidence in the kicking.
- An injury update on Jamir Conn will come on Wednesday with the availability report.
- Rhule said Caleb Benning did a good job coming in for Conn.
- Rhule liked the matchup with Indiana to stop the run, even with Riley Van Poppel out.
- Oregon has "four elite defensive linemen."
- Autzen Stadium is a "loud, difficult place to play."
