Nebraska's new black alternates riff on the new uniform designs from earlier this summer, but with some major upgrades to both the jersey and the helmet.
Do you like the 2026 black alternates?

For the sixth time in program history, Nebraska football will play a game in black alternates.
The Huskers are 0-5 in black uniforms. Those losses have come to USC (2025), Illinois (2020), Indiana (2019), Northwestern (2015), and UCLA (2013).
A bright spot? Nebraska is 17-2 all-time on Halloween, when this edition will be worn.
Here are three thoughts on the latest uniform unveiling.
The Uniform
However you felt about the new uniforms this summer, you're likely feeling the same way with the black alternates.
The number font? The same. Numbers on the outside of the shoulders? The same. The shoulder and pant stripes? The same.
Again, if you loved or hated the new look earlier this summer, then you're probably loving or hating the alternates. With the alternates, however, you do get a red outline to the white numbers.
Nebraska AthleticsA big change (upgrade!) is that the alternates actually feature something in the way of an indicator for who the team is. While the new uniforms are indeed red and white and will have the "A Winning Tradition" patches on them, there is nothing that has the N or says Nebraska on the actual jerseys, save for the small skinny N on the pants.
With the black alternates, you actually get Nebraska written across the front and a block N on the back. Finally, a little brand identity amidst the changing look.
Nebraska AthleticsI, for one, didn't hate the new uniform design. Throwing them out there in black with metallic red accents is a major win.
The Helmet
Going back to those feelings of loving or hating the new uniforms and that continuing with the alternates, those don't get to carry over with the helmets.
The alternates feature a black helmet with two red stripes going down the center. "GBR" is featured just above the facemask, with "A Winning Tradition" written at the base of the helmet on the back.
Nebraska AthleticsThe biggest change from the regular uniform, and perhaps the saving grace for those squarely out on the updates this year, is the script Huskers on the helmet. This is a favorite when it is used in other sports, and it is finally on the gridiron.
Nebraska AthleticsMy only gripe with the helmet is that it isn't available to purchase...yet. If the athletic department wants an easy item to sell, then this should be at the top of the list.
The Blackout
The official release from Nebraska Athletics called for a second-annual blackout at Memorial Stadium on Halloween, when these alternates will be in use against Washington.
I'll begin with this: I was skeptical of the blackout last year against USC. I was unsure of the commitment that would come from the fans in wearing black and not red to Memorial Stadium, as well as how it would look on TV.
I was wrong.
Nebraska may have lost the game, but a fun, new tradition was started. Here's to hoping it last more than just a couple of years. | Dylan Widger-Imagn ImagesTurning the blackout into an annual game is a new tradition that I hope catches on. What will help with that is winning a game with the black uniforms, but from a fan involvement and stadium look, this is a good move for this year and into the future.
