Passed on by the CFL and denied an NFL supplemental draft, the embattled quarterback faces a shrinking market as he weighs UFL prospects and a long wait for 2027.

Things haven’t been great for Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby as he tries to find a path to an immediate future in football. The talented passer has seen his reputation marred by a high-profile gambling scandal, the consequences of which he’s continuously tried to evade.

From appeals to injunctions, from the NFL to the CFL, Sorsby has tried to carve a number of escape lanes from the unsavory results of his poor decision-making off the field and in the sportsbooks.

The latest blockade came from the CFL. Days after the NFL declined to hold a supplemental draft for 2026, an extension of the annual selection process the league has not held since 2023 and in which no player has been selected since 2019, the Canadian Football League also turned Sorsby away due to his damaged reputation.

Now awaits the UFL, the spring league that has often dedicated itself to providing second chances for players looking to continue pursuing their NFL dreams.

For more on Sorsby’s potential with the UFL, Red Raider Roundtable writer Timothy Hamm has the latest.

Should the UFL not pan out, Sorsby’s next best option may simply be the patient wait until the 2027 NFL Draft. When the league chose not to hold a supplemental draft, it explicitly mentioned next year’s draft as a path for the quarterback.

While Sorsby’s options are limited now, he has a future still ahead of him. But he’ll have to face this consequences in stride in order to prove he is ready for such an opportunity.

Entering the 2027 NFL Draft doesn’t guarantee he’ll be drafted. The league may decide to pass on the signal caller, leaving him to sign as an undrafted free agent instead. But in either case, selected or signed, the quarterback has enough talent for at least one team to take a swing.

What happens after that will be up to Sorsby’s resilience to not fall back into old habits and his ability to stay ready despite what might be a long winter without taking a football field.
