The Florida State Seminoles settled on their experienced signal caller that they hope will bring stability at quarterback.
The Florida State Seminoles finally stopped their quarterback carousel, and they officially named their starter after a spring competition stayed open longer than expected. Ashton Daniels was tabbed the starter for the Seminoles after a 15-practice session spring battle with Kevin Sperry, with the decision hoping to bring some stability to the struggling position. It was the presumption when Daniels transferred from the Auburn Tigers back in January that he would become the starting signal caller, but Sperry was a surprising competitor who made it a battle through spring, leading head coach Mike Norvell to hold off on naming his starter until Tuesday.
Daniels’ performance in the spring game proved decisive, with Norvell pointing to his pocket presence, growth on downfield throws, and big plays in the scrimmage that tipped things in his favor. It was always thought to be Daniels, but Sperry certainly made him earn it. After turbulence at the position for two straight years, that instability has weighed on the program. Daniels will hope to bring that sturdiness to the position after the struggles of transfers DJ Uiagalelei and Tommy Castellanos. Notably, his experience level exceeds that of any recent FSU starter.
Here is the full story from Seminoles Roundtable writer Lorenzo Reyna on the decision to name a signal caller before fall camp.
Daniels started his career at Stanford, where he played for the Cardinals for two seasons before transferring to the Tigers. He has 23 career starts and 37 appearances with 4,783 yards and 24 touchdowns while rushing for 1,397 yards and 11 touchdowns. The dual threat has the experience and value, but the results must now follow.
