The Duke transfer wowed in Miami's spring game, but his biggest early victory may be winning over the locker room.
Darian Mensah has seemingly made a seamless transition into the Miami Hurricanes program, and is now working to earn his teammates’ respect through his work on the field and actions over asserting himself based off reputation. Mensah has already made an impression on projected Hurricanes’ starting right tackle Matt McCoy, who has seen a strong ability by the signal caller to get his team on the same page despite just joining the program in late January after a shocking transfer from the Duke Blue Devils. It’s a tall task for Mensah to step in and hope to keep continuity up and uphold expectations that took Miami to the College Football Playoff national title game last season.
Mensah, speaking with the Miami Herald, is quite aware of the strong leaders he’s following in his role, notably Carson Beck and Cam Ward. He’s hoping that his work speaks for itself, as he’s led two programs to their conference championship games in two seasons as a starter. After losing the American conference championship to Army in 2024 as the Tulane Green Wave’s starting quarterback, Mensah transferred to the Blue Devils, where he led them to an AAC title victory.
In his first – and only – year at Duke, he completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns to just six interceptions, leading all Power Four quarterbacks in passing yards. In his time at Tulane, he threw for 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns in 13 games. That passing prowess was showcased in Miami’s spring game, where he threw three impressive touchdown passes that showed off his coveted traits.
Here is the full story from Miami Roundtable writer Shandel Richardson on the new QB for the Canes and how he’s managing to find his way.
The goal at Miami is simple: to lead them to a national title for the first time since 2001. Grabbing Mensah as that final piece is central to the goal – and it appears he’s poised for it.
