The Syracuse Orange top signee suffered an undisclosed injury in spring camp.

The Syracuse Orange signed a major grab in their 2026 recruiting class, with two-sport freshman standout Calvin Russell III arriving as the highest-rated signee in program history. Unfortunately, his spring football debut was short-lived, as the program announced Tuesday that Russell suffered an undisclosed injury during spring practice and will be out for “an indefinite period of time.” It’s a loss the Orange’s receiving corps couldn’t really afford, as that room lost a lot of their leaders.

Russell was ESPN’s No. 4 wide receiver and No. 36 overall prospect in his class. He had 47 catches for 742 yards and eight touchdowns for Miami Northwestern High School his senior year. However, the standout recruit was a two-sport athlete in high school, and he initially joined Syracuse’s basketball team in January. He appeared in one game for the basketball team and was on the roster through ACC play before switching to the football program for spring camp this month. But that’s shut down for now, and Syracuse will look to other options while he’s out to replace their production from last season.

Here is the full story from Syracuse Roundtable writer Brady Farkas on the troubling injury and blow to the Orange’s receiver room.

The Orange saw their passing attack fall from No. 1 in the nation in 2024 all the way to No. 80 last season. They finished 3-9, and don’t return many pass catchers for any continuity purposes with the top seven leaders in receiving yards departing. Now, they’ll look to transfers Elijah Moore, Matt Outten, and Cole Weaver to shoulder some load in his absence.
