UNC placed general manager and top Bill Belichick aide Michael Lombardi on paid administrative leave Monday with no explanation.

There was a sudden shakeup in Chapel Hill, NC., just five weeks before kickoff in the UNC Tar Heels front office.

In an unexpected move, North Carolina placed general manager Michael Lombardi on paid administrative leave on Monday effective immediately.

The university confirmed the move without offering any real reasoning for doing so and remain tight-lipped.

The released statement pointed to standard procedure for “personnel matters” that precludes staff and players from making further comment.

It also insisted that the leave has no bearing on Lombardi’s merits, whatever, frankly, that really means.

It severs a longtime tie for Belichick with Lombardi, whose arrival to the Tar Heels marked a decades-long reunion when he joined the staff back in December 2024.

Their history traces back to Belichick’s time with the Cleveland Browns starting in 1987 where he eventually became Belichick’s director of player personnel.

Then Lombardi worked alongside the six-time Super Bowl champ in their majorly successful dynasty with the New England Patriots, though he was only there from 2014-16.

However, the time in Chapel Hill hasn’t exactly been rosy, with Lombardi running into some hot water last year when he called the Tar Heels the equivalent of the “33rd NFL team” back in February of 2025.

Then they ridiculously barred Patriots scouts from evaluating UNC prospects at practice in an undoubtedly personally fueled move by the duo.

But the news shakes up what was purported to be a strong foundation in Year Two following a 4-8 debut season for Belichick.

It was made worse by the fact that no players were drafted.

But recently, Belichick has gotten out in front of media and talked about stability and consistency this season that this news certainly would go against.

The timing is quite precarious considering the season opener on Aug. 29 against the TCU Horned Frogs with little to no time to sort out front office headaches.
