Four-star passer Peter Bourque chose the Hokies over finalists Georgia and Penn State on Thursday.
James Franklin has made his mark as the former Penn State Nittany Lions coach settles in as the new coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies, and he might’ve made his best move yet. Franklin landed four-star quarterback Peter Borque, who was the top uncommitted passer in the 2027 recruiting class, and is ESPN’s No. 8 quarterback and No. 126 overall prospect. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound prospect from Massachusetts chose the Hokies over the Georgia Bulldogs and Penn State, ironically, after taking visits to all three programs this spring.
Borque had initially committed to the Michigan Wolverines back in August but decommitted on Feb. 17 amid all the firestorms going on there – notably, the firing and arrest of Sheronne Moore – but cited a scheme change under new head coach Kyle Whittingham and OC Jason Beck. He drew interest from the Florida Gators, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Washington Huskies in addition to his top three programs.
Upon re-opening his recruitment, Virginia Tech jumped back in immediately, with Borque’s relationship with Franklin and his quarterbacks coach Danny O’Brien playing a big role from their time with the Nittany Lions while trying to recruit him there. Franklin offered Borque within a month of his hiring back on Nov. 17, and Borque visited during a majorly attended Hokies spring game before making his decision.
Borque is the reigning Massachusetts Gatorade Football Player of the Year. He threw for 2,241 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior at Tabor Academy, as well as rushing in 15 touchdowns last fall. He marks the 12th pledge that the Hokies have secured in their 2027 class since March 19, but he headlines the class as the highest-ranked commit and follows four-star CB Chase Johnson as the highest SC Next 300 prospect. It’s a star-studded class that also includes three-star pass catcher DeMarcus Brown and Anthony Roberts.
Franklin also has the nation’s No. 21 2026 class, one that includes a Penn State flip, quarterback Troy Huhn.
