Will the Real UNC Please Stand Up?

Miami is a lot better than people realize. Jai Lucas has done an excellent job with the Canes in year one after leaving Jon Scheyer's staff at Duke to take this job. With that said, if Carolina wants to be who they think they should be, they have got to be more consistent than what we saw in last night in a  75-66 loss at Coral Gables.

The Hurricanes got off to a red-hot start, building an early double-digit lead and forcing UNC to play catch-up the entire night. The Tar Heels never led in this game. If you take out the game winner by Seth Trimble that was the Heels' only lead against Duke, that makes this the second straight game that UNC did not have a single lead the entire game.

A couple of old issues popped up for the Tar Heels.

For starters, defense was a problem, yet again, for UNC. They looked completely stagnant. Was that hangover from emptying the bucket to come back against Duke on Saturday? Maybe. But, again, if UNC is who they think they are, that shouldn't happen.

Another problem that came up in this loss was the guard play. Derek Dixon has been terrific for the Tar Heels, for the most part, since Hubert Davis made the switch from Kyan Evans to him, but last night Dixon went 1-9 with 2 points.

That's to be expected with a true freshman. Moments like that are going to happen. He's not going to get it done every single night and there will be a bit of a learning curve.

Sticking with guard play, the hero on Saturday night against Duke, Seth Trimble, didn't do much better. He was 0-5 from the field just giving the Heels 4 points.

Another concern for Carolina may be with Caleb Wilson's left hand. Wilson left the game with 15 mins to go and went to the locker room. He ended up returning to court with 9 minutes left to play and had heavy tape on his left hand and wrist. He had a season-low 12 points.

That will be something to monitor moving forward.

The only positive was really with UNC's bench play. If not for them somewhat keeping Carolina in this game, it would have very much resembled the Cal loss several weeks ago.

They key for Carolina as we get closer to March is going to be Caleb Wilson's health and building consistency.

Carolina will stay on the road and go to Pitt on Saturday.
