UNC announced on Friday that Seth Trimble had been medically cleared to return to the lineup.
The senior guard, who sustained a broken bone in his forearm six weeks ago, traveled to Atlanta with the team and is expected to play against Ohio State in Saturday afternoon's CBS Sports Classic.
His presumed insertion into the Tar Heel starting five presents a difficult question for Hubert Davis: Who gets bumped to the bench?
Obviously, UNC's elite front-court tandem of freshman Caleb Wilson and junior Henri Veesaar will remain untouched. So that leaves forward Jarin Stevenseon and guards Kyan Evans and Luka Bogavac as potential candidates to be benched.
The least likely player to sit seems to be Stevenson.
During UNC's first two games, Trimble started alongside Stevenson, plus Veesaar and Evans. At 6-foot-11, Stevenson's size — and track record knocking down open threes while at Alabama — provides lineup flexibility and helps with spacing.
If you asked Tar Heel critics who they might want to see benched, Evans would likely be the most popular answer.
The Colorado State transfer has drawn ire for averaging just 6.5 point per game. He has failed to crack double figures in five straight games and in eight of the last 10. Meanwhile, he was outplayed in two games — Kentucky, then Georgetown — by freshman Derek Dixon.
However, Evans has still started in all 11 games and leads the team in assists with 4.3 per game. He's also been reported to have been paid over $2 million, which is an expensive price tag for a player riding the pine.
That leaves Bogavac, who you should expect to see his role affected the most by Trimble's presence. That's not just because Bogavac came off the bench during the first two games that Trimble played, but there's more positional overlap between the two players than with Stevenson or Evans.
We'll get an answer soon enough. UNC-Ohio State is scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
