SMU handed the Tar Heels just their second loss of the year and their first in ACC play at Moody Coliseum, 97-83.
We'll give fifth year senior, Boopie Miller, his flowers dropping 27 points against the Tar Heels. His career high is 31 points two years ago in an NIT matchup against App State when he was with Wake Forest.
However, this was easily one of the worst defensive performances of the Hubert Davis era at Carolina. In fact, the numbers would point to that. This is the most points the Tar Heels have given up under Davis since a road loss at Wake Forest, 98-76, in his debut season.
The Tar Heels allowed the Mustangs to shoot 60 percent from the field and 52 percent from beyond the arch. Not great.
You should probably consider that an anomaly, though, considering that UNC didn't allow more than 74 points through their first 14 games. The Tar Heels were a top 12 team in the country entering today in two and three point percentage.
To be fair, there's also a reason that this was going to be a sneaky game for the Tar Heels. SMU came in at 11-2 and averaging 91.1 points per game, so we already knew they could score at a high clip. However, doing it against no. 12 Carolina is next level impressive.
Offensively, the Tar Heels were less than stellar. Henri Veesaar had a rare day where he just couldn't seem to get it going and Caleb Wilson, who is usually the catalyst for this UNC team, tied his season low in scoring output with 13 points. His other 13 point performance was back in early November against Radford.
With that said, Seth Trimble continues to be on an absolute tear since returning from injury against Ohio State a couple of weeks ago. Since then, he's put up 17, 12, 20, and 22 point performances.
You also got a 16 point performance from Jarin Stevenson off the bench. Usually when he's hitting from three, like 3 of 4 today, it bodes well for Carolina, but not today.
This is one of those games that the Heels need to just “flush”. They’ll have plenty of time to do that before hosting Wake Forest a week from today at the Smith Center.
