North Carolina Tar Heels head football coach Bill Belichick's job security with the team could be in major jeopardy.

When the North Carolina Tar Heels hired NFL legend Bill Belichick to be their head coach last offseason, many thought the program would be quickly turned around. No one could have predicted just how bad his first college season would have been.

Belichick ended up leading the Tar Heels to a brutal 4-8 overall record and a 2-6 mark in ACC play. Needless to say, that is not what North Carolina was targeting.

Some games looked fine. Others looked downright awful. The Tar Heels were never able to figure out an identity, which had Belichick facing hot seat rumors entering this season.

In Week 0. North Carolina got off to a good start to the year. Belichick's squad ended up hitting the road and taking a hard-fought 15-10 win over the TCU Horned Frogs.

With that being said, more drama has come the Tar Heels' way. Michael Lombardi, the team's general manager, has decided to step down from his position amid an investigation into the program. Belichick could be next.

Steve Belichick, the older Belichick's son, has come under fire. New reports have suggested that he could have either “used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player." Suggestions have begun popping up that the investigation could result in Belichick's termination.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk provided a deeper look at the situation surrounding the North Carolina football program.

"North Carolina G.M. Michael Lombardi resigned on Thursday, not long before a sweeping report from WRAL painted an ugly picture of the Tar Heels program. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, based on that report, could be next," Florio wrote.

"The eventual target could be coach Bill Belichick, also in a for-cause, you’ll-get-nothing-and-like-it outcome that would wipe out the remainder of his buyout."

Florio also suggested that someone within the Tar Heels' program could be searching for a reason to fire Belichick for cause.

"The mere existence of the investigation suggests that someone within the UNC power structure may be looking for a reason to fire Belichick for cause. At plenty of schools where the program is winning, the inclination will be to look the other way when evidence of potential violations emerges. Only when management is looking for a way out do the chapters and verses of the contract’s termination provision become a priority."

Only time will tell what the outcome of the situation ends up being. For now, Belichick is focused on winning football games and taking care of that side of his job security.

More information is sure to become available in the near future. There's enough reason to think that the legendary head coach is facing a very uncertain future at North Carolina.
