There are several former North Carolina players in the NBA.
One of the best one might get traded soon.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Chicago Bulls are open to trading point guard Coby White, who spent one season at UNC in 2018-19.
“Doesn’t mean they’ll actually move him before the Feb. 5 trade deadline, but the Chicago Bulls have left the impression with rival teams inquiring about Coby White that they are more open to trading White than they’ve ever been,” Stein wrote.
White appeared in 35 games at UNC. He averaged 16.1 points and 4.1 assists per game.
The Bulls drafted White with the seventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. White has career NBA averages of 15.4 points and 3.9 assists per game.
Jake Fischer, who is Stein's Substack partner, reports that the Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in trading for White, who is making $12.9 million this season in the final year of his contract. White signed a three-year, $36 million deal with the Bulls in 2023.
"Our publisher wrote over the weekend that Chicago has been more open to Coby White inquiries than ever before and I'm told that Minnesota has indeed checked in on him, but White's looming unrestricted free agent status next summer certainly offsets some of the attractiveness of his comparatively modest $12.9 million salary," Fischer wrote.
White has appeared in 13 games for the Bulls this season. He's averaging 21.4 points and 5.1 assists per game.
It will be fascinating to see if Chicago trades White. UNC basketball fans will certainly be keeping an eye on White's name as the NBA trade deadline draws closer and closer.
