Former North Carolina Tar Heels star Caleb Wilson didn't have a great NBA debut.

Caleb Wilson played at a high level in his one season with the North Carolina Tar Heels, leading the Chicago Bulls to select him with the fourth overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Wilson made his NBA debut on Wednesday, but he struggled, finishing with 16 points, four rebounds, three steals, and a block while shooting 7-for-21 from the field and 1-for-8 from three. Wilson was very inefficient, which contributed to the Bulls' blowout loss to the Toronto Raptors.

The 20-year-old forward also struggled with his decision-making, as he had nine turnovers in the loss. Wilson did show promise on the defensive end of the floor, but it was a rough game for him and Chicago, as he was a -45, which was the worst plus-minus in a debut in NBA history.

Although it was a disappointing debut, Wilson still has a ton of potential and promise to be a great NBA player. In his one season with the Tar Heels, he was a Consensus All-American, averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game, shooting 57.8 percent from the floor and 25.9 percent from deep.

He led North Carolina to a 24-9 record, but they fell in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Wilson missed the end of the season and the NCAA Tournament, as he had a left-hand fracture and broke his right thumb when returning to practice.

The end of Wilson's tenure with the Tar Heels also opened up a new era for the program. They fired head coach Hubert Davis and brought in Michael Malone, who was previously the Denver Nuggets' head coach.

Malone has done a lot for the program, bringing in new talent and changing the culture. He led the Nuggets to a title in 2023, and he could turn North Carolina around and lead them to their first title since the 2016-17 season.

Wilson will look to be more efficient from the field for the rest of his rookie season while continuing to provide great defense.

He should be a contender to win the Rookie of the Year Award against Cameron Boozer, Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa, Darius Acuff Jr., and others.

Wilson has the potential to be an elite two-way player in the NBA and could become the first North Carolina player to win the Rookie of the Year Award since Vince Carter in 1999.
