In a major boost for North Carolina basketball, five-star wing Maximo Adams has decided to honor his commitment to the Tar Heels despite the seismic coaching change in Chapel Hill, last week.

Michael Malone, now inherits one of the program’s most prized recruits in the 2026 class. Adams, who originally signed with the Tar Heels under previous coach Hubert Davis, made it clear he is staying put.

Adams told ESPN: “I’ve always wanted to play for the Tar Heels. It was my dream school growing up, and I’m excited to be coached by Coach Malone.”

The 6-foot-7 small forward from Sierra Canyon High School in California has emerged as one of the top talents in his class. He is currently the No. 21 prospect in the SC Next 100. Highly skilled, with touch from beyond the arc and in the paint, Adams rebounds his position consistently well.

His versatility as a hybrid forward—capable of creating shots off the dribble, finishing at the rim, and stretching defenses with his three-point shooting—makes him a perfect fit for Malone’s up-tempo, player-development system that produced NBA success in Denver.

Adams’ decision comes after weeks of uncertainty following Davis’ departure and Malone’s arrival. Many wondered if top recruits would reopen their commitments amid the transition. Instead, the McDonald’s All-American doubled down on Chapel Hill after direct conversations with Malone and his staff.

Sources close to the program describe Adams as impressed by Malone’s vision for developing wings into two-way stars and his track record of maximizing talent at every level.

Landing and retaining a player of Adams’ caliber provides Malone with an immediate building block for the 2026-27 season.

Michael Malone, a 24-year NBA veteran with a championship ring, brings proven championship pedigree to a new era of Carolina basketball. Retaining Adams shows recruits that Carolina’s allure remains intact even through coaching upheaval.

There may be some learning curve for Malone, but his intensity and commitment to player development should help him to put together a really nice roster for next year.
