Malone is smart and a perfect fit for the Tar Heels.

North Carolina's offensive game plan throughout the college basketball season is pretty clear, as former NBA champion head coach Michael Malone, North Carolina's new head coach, has made it simple in his comments.

Malone has said repeatedly that he wants his team to get downhill, get to the free-throw line, and shoot a bunch of threes.

Of course, that's much easier said than done in the NBA, as even the most talented college teams can have a strange-looking offense at times, but there's reason to believe Malone can get the best out of many of his players.

With guys like Terrence Brown and Matt Able able to break down defenses, there's hope they can create three-point opportunities and easy baskets. Speaking to reporters, Malone reiterated that he wants his team to be aggressive about getting to the free-throw line, going downhill, and shooting threes.

He also made a simple comment about not wanting to live in the mid-range area, something many college basketball players can get fixated on.

“I felt that we got a lot more aggressive," Malone said, per Logan Lazarczyk.

"I felt we were getting downhill more to the rim. We played in the post more, and I’m not sure how many free throws we took tonight. We got to the foul line 30 times, so we really spent a lot of time talking about our shot spectrum. We do not want to be a mid-range shooting team." "It’s just the worst shot in the game, so we want to live at the rim. We want to live at the foul line, and we want to get quality threes up.”

I don't necessarily agree with everyone who says a mid-range shot is bad, especially for NBA superstars who can get to their spots at will.

However, the reality is that the guys in college are nowhere near Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, or others who can get to their spots in the mid-range at will.

As for North Carolina, I'm curious to see what happens if the threes don't fall early on. Malone obviously doesn't want to change his philosophy, but if that happens, something would have to give.
