Mike Malone and the North Carolina Tar Heels have received disappointing news about their top incoming recruit.
The North Carolina Tar Heels have received disappointing news, as the five-star recruit and No. 1 point guard in the 2026 class, Dylan Mingo, is reopening his commitment.
Mingo had originally committed to the Tar Heels in February over Baylor, Penn State, and Washington.
Mingo averaged 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.3 steals per game across 12 games with the PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL circuit.
The decommitment comes after North Carolina fired head coach Hubert Davis after they lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
To replace Davis, the Tar Heels hired former Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone. Malone had a ton of success with the Nuggets, holding a 471-327 record across 10 seasons, including a championship in 2023.
Malone is now tasked with turning North Carolina's program around and getting back to competing for National Championships.
However, with Mingo opening his commitment, Malone and the Tar Heels would have to compete with other schools to land him once again, which seems highly unlikely.
As one of the top recruits in the class, there will be plenty of interest from teams in Mingo.
His brother, Kayden Mingo, is in the transfer portal after spending his freshman campaign at Penn State. He averaged 13.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 47.7 percent from the floor and 24.4 percent from behind the arc. Dylan could consider joining his brother at another school.
Malone has been active in improving the roster. North Carolina landed Neoklis Avdalas in the transfer portal from Virginia Tech.
Avdalas appeared in 31 games in his freshman season, averaging 12.1 points per game along with 3.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He shot 38.6 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from three.
The six-foot-nine guard is an intriguing addition for the Tar Heels as they pursue their first title since the 2016-17 season.
The addition of Avdalas will help the team, but losing Mingo is a big blow for the program.
Malone will look to continue adding to the roster ahead of his first season as North Carolina's coach.
