Reports have started to indicate that the University of North Carolina could lose one of the top basketball recruits in the country to Penn State.
That player is none other than Dylan Mingo, who recently took a visit to the Tar Heels.
As I've said many times, if I were in Mingo's shoes, I’d probably go to North Carolina.
Of course, there has to be something said about his brother playing at Penn State, but if I'm the No. 4 player in the country, I'm going to play for the Tar Heels and do what I have to do for a year before getting drafted.
Despite that, according to the latest from Joe Tipton of On3, it sounds like Penn State is the team to beat. He noted that Penn State, Baylor, and North Carolina are the three finalists, although he hasn't released a finalist list, and that while the Tar Heels have come on strong recently, Penn State will likely be where he ends up.
“Five-Star PG Dylan Mingo: Mingo has taken seven official visits but hasn’t released a list of finalists. Right now, the three programs that look to have the strongest shot at landing the 6-5 point guard are Penn State, Baylor, and North Carolina. The Tar Heels have come on strong recently and now look to have improved their standing.
“Still, Penn State may be the team to beat, with his brother Kayden already on the roster, giving the two a chance to play together in college. Baylor is also firmly in the picture, especially with the connection to his former teammate VJ Edgecombe, who became a lottery pick after starring in Waco. I expect Mingo to settle on a decision within the next few weeks,” he wrote.
I also imagine there's a scenario where his brother, Kayden Mingo, could end up transferring to a school like UNC during the offseason.
If Penn State doesn't have the season it is looking for, which many expect to be the case, I don't understand why he’d want to stay there.
We'll find out relatively soon, probably, so we should get an answer sometime in the near future.
