The North Carolina Tar Heels have received a strong message from a five-star basketball commit.

The North Carolina Tar Heels and head coach Hubert Davis were able to land a commitment from elite five-star guard Dylan Mingo for their 2026 recruiting class on February 17.

Mingo, who currently ranks as the No. 8 overall player in the nation according to 247 Sports, had plenty of teams to choose from. However, the Tar Heels were able to convince him that they were his best possible landing spot.

Outside of North Carolina, Mingo received heavy interest from teams like UConn, Alabama, St. John's, Texas, and multiple others. Despite the other teams involved throughout the process, the Tar Heels stood out to him.

With that being said, Mingo has now revealed why he chose to commit to North Carolina. Fans will love to have that the recent win over Duke was a big part of helping him make his decision.

"I chose North Carolina for North Carolina itself, but definitely seeing everything after they won the game (against Duke), it had a huge impact on my decision," Mingo said.

"It was just so joyful - the players looked so joyful. If you heard Seth Trimble and Caleb Wilson speak after, they talked about how much they loved their community and loved North Carolina, like they would do anything for it. That was pretty fun to see."

Here is what Adam Finkelstein, the Director of Scouting for 247 Sports, had to say about Mingo's game and what he'll bring to the court with the Tar Heels.

"While he has very good size and length at over 6-foot-4 with a better than 6-foot-10 wingspan, he’s a bit bow-legged and thus doesn’t always cover the court with a smooth gate. He can occasionally be nonchalant with the ball, which contributes to a relatively high turnover rate (2.8 assists vs. 2.5 turnovers), but the biggest swing skill is his shooting. He made just 23% of his threes in 13 EYBL games and has somewhat unorthodox mechanics, beginning with his catch and load into the shot."

Hopefully, Mingo is able to live up to the hype at North Carolina. He has elite potential and has chosen the Tar Heels, which will give Davis and company a chance to help him develop and become a big part of taking UNC back to national championship contention.
