Bill Belichick's ambitious NFL pipeline vision falters as North Carolina drafts zero players. Now, he faces scrutiny after a challenging first offseason.
Bill Belichick told Pat McAfee on his show in 2024 that he intended to build North Carolina to be a "pipeline to the NFL."
“If I were in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability,” Belichick said.
“It would be a professional program...training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, techniques... that would transfer to the NFL. It would be an NFL program at a college level, and an education that would get the players ready for their career after football.”
Belichick failed to hit the ground in his first offseason in the transfer portal. UNC appeared to target Group of 5 prospects to play in the ACC in 2025.
North Carolina finished the season 4-8.
During the 2026 NFL Draft, UNC had zero players taken. It was the first year the Tar Heels did not send a player to the draft since 2016.
Belichick faced heavy criticism online for not putting a player in the draft.
UNC did better on the recruiting trail this offseason. The Tar Heels are 50th in the transfer portal and 19th in composite rankings, via 247Sports.
Belichick admitted that he needed a learning curve last season as he coached for the first time at the college level at any capacity.
In March, Belichick said he was behind in recruiting and the transfer portal. He believes UNC is in better shape this year.
"The biggest thing was being late on everything last year," Belichick said, via USA Today. "We were behind on recruiting, behind on the first portal, and then had to make so many changes with the second portal that the team that went to training camp was a lot different from the team that finished spring practice.
"There will be a couple of changes between the end of spring practice and the start of fall camp, probably, but for the most part I’d say 95 percent of our team is in place. We’ll get a few freshmen who enter in June, but most everybody is here. We’ll have a full year of working with them, and that’s way different than last year."
The Tar Heels should be better in 2026 than they were last season. With that being said, it may take another year or two before UNC is ready to compete for an ACC title.
However, North Carolina should be in a better position to put a player in the 2027 NFL Draft.
