Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels have put together a top-20 recruiting class for 2026, a stark change from last year when Belichick first took over the program.
Now, the wheels are in motion for North Carolina, which went just 4-8 and suffered a handful of blowout losses thus past season.
Not only that, but the Tar Heels have also gotten a head start on 2027, securing commitments from three different players.
North Carolina is now hoping that it is zeroing in on a fourth.
Four-star tight end Mason Oglseby has announced that the Tar Heels have made his list of six finalists, with Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Purdue and USC representing the other five schools.
Oglesby is actually listed as an athlete by 247 Sports and is ranked 17th at that spot in the site's composite rankings. He is the 329th-ranked player in his class overall and is the seventh-ranked prospect in the state of Indiana.
UNC has been heavily targeting Oglesby for quite some time now, first making an offer to him back in September. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound weapon has received 26 offers in total.
Oglesby hauled in 34 receptions for 629 yards at New Palestine this past season. Rivals has him listed as the 21st-ranked tight end in the class of 2027.
"UNC is a great opportunity for me because they have a long history of having a good tight end room and getting the ball to the tight ends," Oglesby told Steve Wiltfong of On 3. "It would be great to play for one of the best head coaches of all time, Coach Belichick."
More and more, North Carolina is surfacing as a potential destination for some of the top recruits, indicating that Belichick's presence at Chapel Hill is playing dividends.
Yes, the Tar Heels struggled mightily during Belichick's debut campaign in 2025, but that can be chalked up to Belichick having never coached on the collegiate level before. He also didn't really get a chance to put a proper roster together after taking the UNC job in December 2024.
We'll see if North Carolina can ultimately earn a commitment from Oglesby, which would certainly be a major get for the offense.
